SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say a Utah man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after he tossed his girlfriend's puppy from their third-floor apartment, killing it.

Authorities say the couple was fighting in a Taylorsville apartment early Wednesday morning, and the woman decided to leave.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says she was on the ground floor when her boyfriend, 20-year-old Juan Anzastiga, threw the Yorkshire puppy.

Police say he picked up the dog and tried to drive away, but was arrested as he pulled out of the parking complex.

Anzastiga was booked on charges of investigation of animal cruelty, tampering with evidence and criminal mischief. It was not clear Wednesday if he had an attorney, and a phone message seeking comment left at a phone number publicly listed for him was not immediately returned.
