WILLARD, Box Elder County — A teenage boy and his grandmother were killed Saturday when a pickup truck ran into the side of their car north of Willard.

The 15-year-old Salt Lake County boy with a learner's permit was driving a Lexus with his 66-year-old grandmother, Ruth Nelson, of Box Elder County, in the passenger seat.

About 5:30 p.m., the boy was making a left turn onto U.S. 89 from Highway 315 when a southbound Toyota Tundra rammed into the side of the vehicle, according to Willard police officer Jean Loveland.

Nelson and her grandson died at the scene. Loveland, however, would not release the name of the teenage boy.

The driver of the Tundra was treated for minor injuries at the Brigham City Community Hospital.

Loveland said it appeared the boy failed to yield to a stop sign before making the turn.

"In a preliminary investigation, it doesn't look like the driver of the Tundra was at fault," she said.

The incident remained under investigation and will be reviewed by the Box Elder County Attorney's Office.
