SNOWVILLE, Box Elder — A passenger in a minivan was killed in a crash after the vehicle drifted on I-84 Monday, police said.
A silver Chrysler Town and Country minivan drifted toward the median on I-84 near exit 5 past Snowville, which is located close to the Idaho border, while traveling west at about 6:16 p.m., according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The driver over-corrected when his side of the vehicle went off the roadway, according to investigators.
“The driver over-corrected back toward the right, causing the van to spin sideways as it went completely across both westbound lanes and off the right shoulder,” a statement from UHP reads. “The vehicle traveled down through the grass and dirt and eventually hit a cement drainage area.”
The minivan landed on its roof, facing east, after rolling 1.5 times, according to investigators. They said Albert Arzaga, 54, of Chula Vista, California, was killed instantly when he was ejected from the middle row of the minivan as it rolled. He was sitting directly behind the driver.
A 4-year-old girl sitting on the driver’s side of the back row had a severe head injury and was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital by Life Flight. Additionally, a man riding on the back seat was taken to an Ogden hospital by air ambulance with critical injuries.
The driver and three other passengers were released from a local hospital after being treated, according to UHP.
