MURRAY — A good Samaritan driving to a family dinner Tuesday stopped to help an injured man laying in a ditch near Cottonwood High School. While the driver claims he's not a hero, the accident highlights some safety concerns in the heart of Salt Lake County.

Jordan Sinquefield was driving on 1300 East around 8 p.m. when he saw a man on the ground.

"I just had an inclination, 'You should probably check your rearview mirror,' " Jordan Sinquefield said. "(The man) was laying on his back, holding his back, holding his head."

The man, whom Sinquefield said appeared to in his early 20s, told Sinquefield he had been hit by a car in a crosswalk near the high school, at 5715 S. 1300 East.

"He claims he rolled and hit here on the sidewalk," Sinquefield said.

The man showed no signs of injury, Sinquefield said, but had been unconscious for several minutes. To prevent a second accident, Sinquefield began directing traffic while a nearby resident called 911. Sinquefield then stayed until paramedics arrived.

"I'm not a hero, but ... if my family member was laying in the road, I would want someone to stop," Sinquefield said.

Nick Cader, who lives in the area, said a young girl was hit by a car in the same area about a year ago. He said drivers often speed in the area and don't typically stop for pedestrians.

"This is a 35 mph zone. Look at these people," Cader said, gesturing to the traffic on 1300 East, "they are not going 35 mph."

As a warning to drivers, Cader wants more stop signs on 1300 East.

Meanwhile, Murray police say 1300 East is not a dangerous road for pedestrians. However, they caution drivers to be even more attentive when passing the high school.
