SALT LAKE CITY — Police officers were out en mass Wednesday night, keeping an eye out for potential problems ahead of Thursday's Days of '47 Parade.

The officers spent much of the afternoon and evening warning people to move their cars away from the parade route, towing vehicles that remained, and trying to keep the peace in instances of disputed spots along the route.

Salt Lake City police detective Greg Wilking acknowledged with the tradition of the parade comes the expectation that families' spots one year will be theirs the next.

"People have saved spots for a long time, and they get upset (when others try to take them)," Wilking said.

Wilking preached patience and respect, and encouraged people to do their best to get along with their parade route neighbors.

At least 30 volunteers were expected to join police Wednesday night in watching for problems.

Thursday's parade route begins on South Temple at State Street and jogs to 200 East. From 200 East, the route heads south to 900 South, then east again to 600 East.

Police also advised people not to bring their dogs to the parade, with the exception of service animals.

"It can be a stressful situation for some dogs and it can be a stressful situation for people, too," Wilking said.

Officers also cautioned drivers planning to be downtown Thursday morning that roads would be closed along the route starting just before 5 a.m. and wrapping up around noon.

"We're hoping that everybody ... pays attention to the rules and gets along," Wilking said.

Of course, you can beat the crowds and miss the traffic by watching the parade live on KSL channel 5, from 9a.m. to 11 a.m.
