MIDVALE — Two people were hospitalized in critical condition following a late night motorcycle accident Tuesday.

Unified police say one of the victims was in extremely critical condition as of Tuesday evening.

The accident happened just before 11 p.m. near 900 East and Fort Union Boulevard. A man and woman, both estimated to be in their late 20s to early 30s, were on a motorcycle when an SUV made a left turn in front of them, causing a collision.

Neither the driver nor the motorcycle passenger were wearing helmets. The condition of the female passenger, who suffered severe head injuries, was said to be grave, said Unified police detective Ken Hansen.

The male driver of the SUV was taken to police headquarters for questioning and a blood draw to check for possible drugs and alcohol, which is standard for any major accident.

The woman's family lives out of state. Names of the victims were not released pending notification of family members.

Hansen urged all drivers to be cautious and motorcycle riders to wear helmets.

“I think in this case, particularly the female passenger, had she been wearing a helmet, it could have made a big difference,” Hansen said.

“You’ve got to take some extra precautions like slowing down at intersections and assuming that person may not see you,” he added.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
