MONTICELLO — Police say a crash left five dead and two in critical condition on Sunday.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a van carrying five people attempted to pass another vehicle on U.S. 191, a two-lane highway near mile marker 81.
A sports car with two people was traveling in the other direction with two people, Trooper Evan Kirby said.
The van attempted to make a lane change when the vehicles collided and the sports car caught fire, according to Kirby. Momentum carried the sports car off of a steep embankment. It came to rest about 100 feet below the roadway and burned.
A small brush fire started but was quickly extinguished.
Both passengers in the sports car died along with three of the van's passengers. The other two passengers in the van are in critical condition.
UD OT confirmed that the road was cleared just before 9:30 p.m.
