GERMANY — A German company is giving people the opportunity to take a step back in time by letting them send GPS-tracked messages in a bottle.

Message from a Bottle held its official launch Wednesday with plans to send its first GPS-tracked message in a glass bottle in August. The bottles will be launched into the Atlantic ocean from the west of Ireland "where the flow is most favorable," according to the Message from a Bottle website.

Users will have the opportunity to send a personalized message to someone and will be able to track the bottle for up to one year with a sophisticated navigation system, according to ABC News. Message from a Bottle said it will inform users when the bottle is found, and the individual will be sent a link of the mapped route where the bottle traveled.

The bottle will start its watery journey with a group of other bottles in a biodegradable wooden box. When the box decomposes, the bottles will be freed to travel their own routes throughout the ocean.

A standard version of the floating missive costs $39.90. The company said the proceeds will be donated to a local charity.
