SALT LAKE CITY — The new chairman of the Salt Lake County GOP is Dale Ash, one of more than a half-dozen Republicans who unsuccessfully sought in 2012 to unseat Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

Ash said the Salt Lake County GOP "will continue to support conservative principles....We believe that American constitutional freedom is the greatest hope for prosperity for every resident of Salt Lake County and for all Americans."

Members of the county's Republican Party Central Committee selected Ash Thursday over two other candidates, Rick Votaw, who had the support of state GOP Chairman James Evans, and Wade Miller.

Ash takes over from acting chairwoman Suzanne Mulet. Mulet, who assumed the post when former chairman Chad Bennion resigned in March after domestic violence charges were filed against him, remains the party's vice chairwoman.

The county party also chose Mel Nimer again to serve as treasurer. Nimer had resigned as treasurer earlier this year to run for a county council seat but lost that race at the party's convention in April.
