PROVO — The Pleasant Grove doctor convicted of murdering his wife returned yet again to court Thursday morning where his attorney argued for a new murder trial.

The wheels of justice are still moving slow in the case of Martin MacNeill, who still has not been formally sentenced for the murder he was convicted of back in November.

MacNeill walked into the Fourth District court Thursday appearing the same as he has in recent months, with a beard, after he attempted suicide using a razor. He is accused of assaulting one of his daughters in the weeks after his wife Michele died. Defense attorney Randy Spencer said MacNeill is open to discussing a plea deal with prosecutors.

Spencer also argued that MacNeill should be granted a new trial in his murder case, a motion Pullan has to consider before MacNeill can be formally sentenced to prison.

Pullan ruled MacNeill was competent to stand trial in May. Questions over his competency had stalled both cases for months.

Spencer said MacNeill is still having a hard time as he remains under close observation in the county jail.

MacNeill will be back in court Monday for arguments in the sex abuse case. Pullan set another hearing in the murder sentence for June 30.
