MOAB — A Moab man was crushed by the gate on a garbage truck in a work-related accident Monday morning.

Jay Stephens, 51, an employee at Bob's Sanitation, 2295 S. U.S. 191, was helping a driver unload his truck at a transfer station about 9:30 a.m. when the accident occurred, the Grand County Sheriff's Office reported.

The truck's lift gate was raised and its cargo unloaded when the truck pulled forward and lowered the lift gate, according to the report. Stephens was caught between the rear of the truck and the lift gate when it lowered, crushing him.

The accident is under investigation.
