SALT LAKE CITY — The 2nd annual Comic Con Film Festival is taking submissions.

Whether action, adventure, mystery, comedy or documentary, the festival is looking for the best of Utah’s geeky filmmakers to come showcase their stuff.

Films, selected by a committee based on genre guidelines and artistic merit, will be shown during the film festival from Sept. 4-6.

The festival accepts sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, supernatural, dystopian, superhero and steampunk films — all due by July 19. Those accepted into the festival will be eligible for screenings, complete with a Q&A for the audience afterward. Selected filmmakers will also be awarded complimentary passes to the 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con.

Jen Ogle is an actress, costumer, set dresser and director who specializes in nerd culture. She starred in a fan film — "Flight from Shadow" — that was featured in last year’s festival.

“The Q&A session was very interactive,” Ogle said of her experience. “It (her movie) was based on Robert Jordan's ‘Wheel of Time’ series. Brandon Sanderson was thrilled we were doing it.”

She said she heard great things about the festival as a whole — both from creators and the audiences viewing the films.

"The festival accepts sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, supernatural, dystopian, superhero and steampunk films — all due by July 19."

“I am a Comic Con regular,” Ogle said. “My theater group, Out of the Shadows, has performed and done a panel for FanX.”

Filmmaker Paul Cusack recently received word that his own fan film — which pays homage to James Bond — will be shown at the festival. He’s a big fan of the Con itself and said he is thrilled to be included.

Films or trailers that were previously screened at the 2013 Salt Lake Comic Con Film Festival or the FanXperience LOL Comedy Film Competition are not eligible. For more details, visit the official Salt Lake Comic Con Film Festival’s website.
