SALT LAKE CITY — A taxi driver is in the hospital after he said he was stabbed by a passenger.

Salt Lake City police believe someone stabbed the driver several times in the back in a parking lot at about 900 West and 1000 North just after 11 p.m. Wednesday.

“The suspect gave him an address,” explained Sgt. Tyrone Farillas of the Salt Lake City Police Department. “During the drive, the suspect changed his mind. When they got back the suspect ordered the victim out of the cab and took the victim’s wallet and cell phone, then stabbed him.”

A passerby saw the cab driver was in trouble, pulled over and took him to a hospital. His condition has not been released.

Police combed the area looking for the attacker but have not found any suspects. Police describe the attacker as an African-American man, about 6 feet tall, wearing a black jacket and blue jeans.

Any witnesses are asked to call police at 801-799-3000.
