PROVO — New details for the expansion of the LDS Missionary Training Center in Provo were released Tuesday.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that the construction of the MTC expansion is expected to begin in the summer of 2015 and will last two years, according to a news release on Mormon Newsroom.

The new buildings that will be added will create additional space for classrooms, personal study and small-group activities. The buildings will be six stories high, but the LDS Church said the height and placement requirements fit the zoning guidelines of Provo City.

The expansion will also include enhanced outdoor space for missionary use, 300 underground parking stalls and improved landscaping to beautify the area and provide a "neighborhood buffer," the news release said.

The LDS Church announced that classroom buildings near the MTC entrance will be torn down once the new buildings are complete, and a new landscaped drive will be installed in their place.

The expansion will not include living quarters, but existing rooms in the residence halls are being remodeled to increase capacity. Currently, the church is utilizing two nearby apartment complexes to house the influx of missionaries at the MTC that resulted from the lowering of age requirements for missionaries announced in October 2012.

More than 85,000 LDS missionaries are currently serving around the world.
