SALT LAKE CITY — Desert Noises was a dream of frontman Kyle Henderson. Together with his brother and two friends, he formed a band that has made it to festivals around the country, playing shows for people who have taught them about music, being a good person and appreciating their roots. The band will be at Urban Lounge May 3, to celebrate and promote their new album, "27 Ways."

KSL: What's your "origin story?" How long have you been playing music, and what inspired you to create a band?

KYLE HENDERSON: The band started in my parents' basement with my brother and me. We used to jam and try to learn how to play music. Eventually, I went on tour with Joshua James playing bass and things changed. I came home wanting to push my own music and found a group of guys wanting to do the same. We set out on the road trying to make the most of what we could. Life is our inspiration. Whatever comes our way can change the way we think or do anything. It's been one wild experience. We all played in different local bands. Somehow the stars brought us to the point of living in a van together and enjoying the time we get to spend living at 80 miles an hour.

KSL: What inspires you? Who are your musical influences?

HENDERSON: We all listen to different things, but what inspires us is the bands we meet on the road. It's always an ever-changing thing. You could hear anything in our van. Local Portland band AAN to John Prine. Our friends Roadkill Ghost Choir. And always the beautiful Stevie Nicks. You never know what you'll hear.

KSL: What do you tell yourself before a performance?

HENDERSON: Have fun.

KSL: What is your five-year plan with your music?

HENDERSON: There is no five-year plan. Live day to day. One step at a time.

KSL: What has been the most exciting thing to happen in your career to date?

HENDERSON: I think it would have to be playing ACL music festival. Watching and hanging out with the bands you grew up listening to. Super excited for the festivals this year as well. We're playing Hangout, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza. Festivals we've been wanting to go to growing up. Now we're going and can't be more excited.

KSL: Who have you most enjoyed collaborating with, and who is your dream collaboration?

HENDERSON: Our producer for the last record, Nic Jodoin, was awesome. We love him with all of our hearts and think he is a nut. We had a blast. We love working and meeting with new people. It's more of, if they can work with us and vibe. That's what creates the dream experience.
