SALT LAKE CITY — A pedestrian was killed late Sunday while crossing Redwood Road.

Edoxio Villalobos-Barrera, 66, was crossing the road near 400 North at 11:03 p.m. when he was hit by an SUV, according to Salt Lake Police Lt. Lance VanDongen. The driver of the SUV flagged down an officer who was out on another call. Villalobos-Barrera died at the scene, VanDongen said.

Villalobos-Barrera was not using a crosswalk when he was hit, according to Salt Lake police. VanDongen cautioned people to be aware of their surroundings and crossing rules, especially in inclement weather.

The driver is not suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and police do not believe the motorist was speeding or distracted when the car hit Villalobos-Barrera.

"Weather likely did play a role in this. The victim was wearing dark clothing. He was crossing in a dark area of the roadway with wet roads and rainy weather," VanDongen said.

Pedestrians should wear visible clothing at night, be aware of their surroundings and use a crosswalk when possible, he said. When a crosswalk is not available, cross where the roadway is lit, and use good judgment, VanDongen said.

"Don't try to beat traffic," he advised.
