SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was charged Thursday with hitting and choking his wife until she lost consciousness.

Anthony Stokes, 65, was charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony; two counts of tampering with a witness, a third-degree felony; and five counts of contacting a domestic violence victim from custody, a class B misdemeanor.

Police say Stokes became angry with his wife on Sunday and began hitting and choking her until she lost consciousness. While doing so, he said, "Today is a good day for a murder," and later told her that if she told police, he would "take everyone out," according to charging documents.

The next day, Stokes' wife was unable to hear from her right ear, her eye was swollen shut and she had a "very bad headache," the charges state. Stokes agreed to take her to a hospital on the condition that she tell doctors that she had tripped over a wire, according to police.

When officers came to the home, Stokes told them his wife had tripped on a cord, police said. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Monday on $250,000 bail.

A search of court records shows Stokes pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a controlled substance in 1991 and to theft of services in 2011.
