@Ernie Woo - I do live in the landing path. Usually there is a press release when they are about to do night maneuvers... They were also doing power landings which is quite loud... but I just said, Hey, they must be doing night training... and I went to sleep. Now I know, next time I should call KSL in a panic.
@Ernie Woo - I wonder what my grandparents and several WWII veterans that went through food/gas rationing in the 40s would say to these yuppie cry babies that have to whine about a little noise that disrupts thier peaceful beauty sleep.
I can understand being annoyed at construction noise or commercial airline noise but this is the MILITARY! These guys are out there training and sacrificing for your right to whine about the noise. Get a grip people! We know so little about what true sacrifice even means.
@Ernie Woo - What were the jets flying circles over her house for two hours? Somehow, I don't think that's physically possible, that tight little turn would create the G-forces to crush a full soda can.
Is her DVD player "back" button not working?
My surround sound works perfectly, I can't even hear the jets when they fly over, which is everyday. So either hers' is a little off the shelf peice of junk or she's had it so loud so often she's blown a few speakers out.
I grew up under the "flight plan" of the old F-4's when they used to come thundering off the runway. They used to break the windows at my elementary school, so believe me, these jets are QUIET compared to those.
Besides, if you bought that movie, or rented it, or are getting in from satellite, or OnDemand, whatever..., don't you think it'll be on again sometime?
Next time, Dial 1-800-Boo-Hooo! Half the population of the Wasatch Front deals with it every day, you can deal with it for just one or two. Even at nite.
Engineers may design the world, it's the TECHNICIANS that make it work.
@Ironmomo - The noise they are all complaining about is "The Sound of Freedom". Those pilots and maintainers would rather be at home with their families, but their Nation has called them to duty. The mission they have been asked to do is to fly at night to hone their skills.
@Chatea B. - I can totally agree with what you are saying because that is my husband working late at night. My husband works on the jets and they have been working all hours of the night training to keep all of us safe. Even those of you that find it necessary to whine and cry because your sleep was disturbed. They work all night here usually 12-13 hour shifts. They don't get "beauty" sleep ever. Now do you annoying people still have something to complain about? Honestly, GET OVER IT!!!!!!!
@Ironmomo - I am happy to see them training. A couple of months ago we had Apache Helicopters flying around and around all day on Saturday. I loved it! If you live by the base then you should expect odd air traffic at any time. You can't train with night goggles in the day!
The article says the pilots had to take a southern approach instead of the usual northern approach because of weather. The folks who live on the north side aren't complaining about them when the weather pattern is different. I bet the folks on the north side couldn't sleep because it was too quiet.
I am so grateful these men and women are willing to put their lives on hold to help protect my freedom and the freedom of others.
@Slc_climber - Sorry about your son, but guess what? life goes on and most of it is because of those jets that woke your son up defending our rights. So get over it!
@Slc_climber - Stop complaining, take 1 second out of your lives and understand what it is that we do for you. those "Noisy jets" keeping you up is the same reason you have a warm nice house to sleep in and you dont have insurgents running around. How do you think my wife feels? We live on the base, do we complain? no. not even when it somes time for us all to be shipped 10,000 miles away from all we know and love to keep that blanket of freedom you lay under everynight. So when you feel like complaining just cowboy up and understand that "noise" is the least of our worries.
@Ron H. - First, I grew up as an Air Force Brat (yes, capital B)and actually liked the sonic booms we'd get during class times while at Bitburg or Wiesbaden AFBs in Germany.
I agree that the silence we all experienced was eerie post 9-11... made me sad why we had the silence.
Second, last night, while on the way home at night, my kids noticed lots of cool plane or jet activity.
Glad to know our guys are doing night flying training.
@Slc_climber - ...just passing over to land back at the base. The actual training on the range is *much* louder and can be as little as 50 feet off the deck.
Although the afterburners can be disconcerting when you first hear them, you get used to it.
It was especially fun in the days of f4s when the needle would skip on your record player...
@Ron H. - I'm sorry that our military base inconvienced your peaceful night of rest. Let me guess, you want them to just annoy Davis County all the time. Hopefully there will be more southern landings so you get a taste of what we put up with for your safety.
@firefighter - Please, please, PLEASE do not lump all of Salt Lake County together with the few whiney ones that want their beauty sleep.
The military is appreciated in my family and whatever sacrifice we can make to help them is ok with me and mine.
I am completely appalled by the attitude of the cry babies who couldn't get to sleep for a couple extra hours because of the noise. It's apparent by their complaints that they would prefer our men and women to die on the front lines from lack of training, rather than be inconvenienced by a little noise.
Like I said, please don't lump those of us with compassion and commitment to our country and military with those that abuse their rights that the military fought so hard for them.
@Ron H. - You Poor BABY!!!! Maybe next time you can watch your movie without interruption. You are the epitome of a poor yuppie spoiled brat. I Hope you can overcome your night terrors. Why don't you get a lawyer and sue.
Truly Unbelievable that this is even front page "News" (I use the term loosely)
Hey Gene Kennedy and KSL, try and find a story worth reporting. What a SORRY story this is! (Becoming a regularity with KSL)
@Roger L. - KSL will quote a person like the whiner but refuses to tell us when an ILLEGAL ALIEN COMMITS A CRIME!!! They don't want to prejudice the public! Too late, research shows how much crime they commit! Tell the whole truth KSL. We, the intelligent public, want the truth!
@Robert A. - ...do people like you have to try to turn every story into a discussion about Illegal aliens?
Yes, it's a problem, but get a life. Obsession is not a good thing, and it's obvious that you're obsessed with illegal aliens.
Quit crying about it. Stick to the story at hand.
You, "the [supposed] intelligent public" don't want the truth. Your lack of intelligence is showing by your lack of ability to stay on task. This is a story about military training and a cry baby woman (and others) who can't get her beauty sleep. This story is nothing about immigration and its problems.
What a sour, bigoted, racial person you are. I'm on the same page with the problem of illegal immigration. But there's a time to speak up, and a time to shut up. Stay on task, stick with the proper story, and cry all you want when there is an actual story about illegal immigration.
What a sad life you must have to be so focused on one thing at the expense of everything that's good....
@Homedepot20 - I live in one of the "Rich East Layton and high priced bench homes" and I EARNED the right to buy that home. For the reord, the story was about Salt Lake County residents beefing about the noise, NOT your allegations that we on the east side in Davis County were complaining.
Sounds like YOU have a lot of personal bias about WE USAF veterans(I spent 8 years on USAF active duty) and our neighbors! Also, I've not heard ONE single complaint about the jet noise here(Davis County). Unlike you, WE really love watching the jets and their crews in action, I feel safer with THEM over MY home then the commercial flights flying into the SLC airport. It would be prudent for YOU to read the full story first, notwithstanding it's a true piece of trash, get your bias in order before YOU knee-jerk yourself into oblivion.
For the NIMBYS in Salt Lake County who are "scared", poor babies, you would omplain about anything wouldn't you. Be adults, it's not that hard to do.
@Otherjonathon L. - I am Sorry, see i can say that,
The way they told it on KSL TV it was from South of Hill to SLC.
I still like to watch Aircraft, I worked the F-16 for 21 years and the F4 for a year.
I spent 7 months in Desert Shield/Storm and a year alone In Korea.
You want to SLAM me about comments, I still enjoy the Aircraft today.
I have rode in an F-16B and an F-16D.
I have lived on Hill AFB before and have lived by many bases and the Jet Noise has NEVER bothered me.
You are right about others, Salt Lake County who are "scared", poor babies, you would omplain about anything wouldn't you. Be adults, it's not that hard to do.
@Gorganzola - the way i see it is you moved there an hill was there first so deal with it or move! now i dont live even close to hill but if i did i would deal with it, i work out at Dugway an i love the jets flyin over an do what they do cuz like WB said its the sound of "Freedom".
@Desert racin fool - I've lived next to Hill for much of my life, and eventually, you get used to the airplanes. I'm not sure why these night trainings affected people so much this time, when they normally fly at all times of the day in all seasons. I didn't notice anything. I guess that shows how clueless I am about things...
@SkullPrincess - I love the sound of the jets no matter what time of day or night. In fact, I lived in Brigham City for almost 2 years and I missed the jets terribly. Bring on the night manuevers!
@Gorganzola - 5 minutes from hill and hear it everyday. It doesn't bother me one single bit. In fact, LOVE hearing it and appreciate the feeling of security it gives me. I appreciate what these people do for us THANKS and keep up the good work!!!!
@Crashing - I live in Layton right below the flight line, during the day when the jets fly overhead we can almost read the markings on the jets. My kids have always thought it was cool to be able to see the jets so close. We have lived in Layton only for about 6 months and have no problems sleeping at night, sure once in a while if we are up late watching TV we have to pause the movie while the jets fly by, but we realize that we are close to the base and so it doesn't bother us. This happens enough I would think people would get a clue...guess not
@Crashing - Are you in one of those subdivisions where people practically share backyards?
Then, are you one of those dog owners whose dog barks 24-7? If so, consider this Karma, dude! Hee Hee.
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, ooh, oh oh I love to swimmmmm! - Dorey
@Crashing - It’s much easier to train during the day, but unfortunately our enemies sometimes like to use the cover of darkness. So, our military needs to train as they are expected to fight. Be thankful of these pilots and maintainers who adjust their and their families schedules to inconvenience you in order to protect you.
@Crashing - Crashing, your comment on "go somewhere else during the night" cracked me up. Where would you recommend they take a flight of F16's, their support crews and the tower?
One of the reasons our military is one of the best in the world is learning to own the night where our enemies cannot fight. If that means a few sleepless nights while our men and women in uniform are WORKING to keep us free, that is a small price to pay. While we are comfortable in our homes they are training to protect us from those that would do us harm.
So please show gratitude every time that jet noise comes over your house in knowing that your U.S. soldiers are out there protecting you.
All I have to offer is blood, sweat, toil and tears.
@LostinSLC - My comment completely agrees with you! God Bless America! Can I still use the word God? Salute our troops and they're great sacrifice. Be glad your not the one sweating in the trenches!
@Crashing - Crashing - I hope you are kidding. Where would you like the fighters to go? I'm pretty sure Hill Air Force Base was there long before you moved in.
F-16s are equipped with LANTIRN (Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night) systems and the pilots MUST become proficient at flying at night at low altitudes or they will die in combat. They cannot simulate night conditions.
Back in the day (1980s) the base I was at in Arizona flew night ops often, and we got the same complaints, so this is nothing new, just annoying.
It is simple and others have said it quite eloquently - if you don't like aircraft noise, don't live by an Air Force base.
@Truthful - they can simulate just about any condition in a simulator. They are very life like. That being said, currency and experience in other than daytime scenarios will also be practiced in actual conditions. They will fly day, night, VFR (visual flight rules), IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) High altitude, low altitude etc, etc. All will be simulated and flown because all will exist when/if they go to battle.
@budwa - A trainer will possibly help the pilots, except when something goes wrong. Then they have to rely on the maintenance personell to fix it, pilots arent the only ones training. The jets break(they are almost 10 years old) how do you think they get repaired? Maintainers need the training also. At the same time imagine playing a race car game. You should be ready for the real thing in a few weeks right? There is a huge difference between a trainer and the real thing. A trainer is only as good as the programmer and you cannot possibly put in everything. You can't simulate running in chocks before a takeoff and having a main generator fall off line, having to step to another jet just in time to make the takeoff time. you sound like you might know what you are talking about but to someone who actually works on the jets you just sound 'uneducated'.
@Andiecutiepie - they need not fly actual missions. What are you talking about?
I said that the simulators (flight) are very adept at training, yet they will have to fly actual conditions, meaning actual flights as well. Actual conditions means in the actual aircraft in real scenarios. Get it now?
@budwa - "They are very life like" You said it. Life like is real life. As a F-16 mechanic who worked exerices at night, there is nothing in a simulator to help the mechanics work at night under blackout conditions. You really don't know what you are talking about. Training needs to be as real-life as possible.
@Truthful - When is the last time you spent hours flying procedures in the various potential conditions in a simulator. As a F-16 mechanic, how many hours do you have logged as PIC of an aircraft. I have been in aircraft full motion simulators, and my PIC time rises to the thousands of hours. There is nothing you can't practice in a simulator. My statement was in reply to someone who stated that night flight operations with the automated systems is not possible, and that is absolutely not true. Nowhere did I state that in aircraft hops should be replaced by simulators. I clearly stated that all procedures and scenarios will and should be practiced in the "actual conditions" because pilots may encounter a wide variety scenarios while in battle. I am not advocating moving flight training indoors. I am advocating exactly the opposite. I thought I clearly stated that although simulators are capable of amazing things, these drills still must be practiced in "actual conditions, and that includes night. Try reading it again before you accuse someone of not knowing what they are talking about.
@budwa - I had to mark a "disagree". They can do amazing things with simulation, but in the end you have to train the way you must fight. Simulation approximates conditions in the air, but can't duplicate it exactly. Overdependence on simulations get fliers killed.
@Lee - That is exactly what I stated. Read it again and you clearly see that I stated that scenarios will be practiced in "actual" conditions. That would mean non-simulated. My point was that even though simulators are almost exactly like flying the actual aircraft, they will need to actually fly the aircraft as well, and that means they will do so during the day, at night, in VFR and IFR for training purposes.
@Truthful - Good stuff!
I am so very impressed by the Dutch Air force who was in town until last week! They are a very top notch group of professionals whom give well of themselves for the benefit of others.
They are all highly appreciated!
Thank you all - love the sound!
Matters not where one was born, we are in this together!
This great Country is built on strong and diverse character! Please do some good for YOUR U.S.A today!
@Crashing - well when one crashes at night lets just blame you for them not being able to train.. they need it just as much as you need your sleep dude!!!!!
@Crashing - All I have to say is; anybody living at either end of the runway are idiots, Id rather live next to the train tracks!---You really cant complain since you chose that location!
@Crashing - Do you expect that they will just fly for 10-12 hours just so you can get your sleep? I know....maybe we should tell the military not to attack/defend or train at night because someone here in the SLC Valley is whinning that it is happening durring the night.
@WB - I totally agreee with what you are saying. My husband was in the military for 20 years and if you want freedom, you better learn to live with the sound of freedom.
If "OUR" soldiers do not train, the will fail in combat. So, please let them train!
We live next to an Air Force base with Air Force fighter jets. They make noise and they aren't going anywhere any time soon. They fly where they want to, when they want to, and that's not going to change.
As for the public fear factor, if you're so insecure that you perceive the jets flying more often than usual as indication of a possible threat, then you need to see a professional about anxiety counseling.
If the threat of terrorism scares you then do your part to get prepared for any kind of disaster. Stop watching American Idol and start doing some research. Buy some extra food and water, get a gun and learn to use it, and try to mentally prepare for possible tough times ahead. You can then rest easier in the knowledge that you've done all you can, come what may. You'll benefit society a lot more that way then sitting on the couch like a zombie.
@Rhone - Those who are complaining let me bring up two points
#1 Hill AFB was there first, If you moved in next to a airport, you got to expect aircraft to be flying. They are not going to stop because you’ve moved into the neighborhood.
#2 What you are hearing is the sound of freedom, don’t like it? MOVE!
I agree. The sounds is a little loud and makes it difficult to sleep at night but I think it is so worth it. I was thinking of the people that were flying them last night and feeling appreciation for them and their sacrifice for us. Thanks for all you do, I appreciate it!
@mbrflint - The F-16 Falcon has given our nation domination in the skies for many decades and has kept us safe. We should be appreciative for those who sacrifice to bring us such safety.
Hill AFB is a HUGE, and I say HUGE, benefit to our state. The whining and complaining about some noise is really quite childish. Do you complainers wish we should close Hill? Would you prefer watching our state's unemployment rate jump a few points, and watching home and property values plummet in Weber, Davis, and parts of Salt Lake County?
It’s complaining like this that lands on BRAC ears. A major consideration on base closure is encroachment.
Hill is huge to our economy and vital to training our nation's Airmen. Be grateful it's here. If to land the aircraft safely means they have to fly over your house, put in some earplugs and most of all bite your tongue.
Heck is the place for people who don't believe in gosh.
Wow, to think of a society that turns first to KSL to ask the question, "Hey, I live by HAFB and there were jets flying about last night. What was going on?" instead of just thinking, "Hey, I live by HAFB and there were jets in the sky. Just like every other day (and a lot of nights). I bet they were practicing something." Hey, concerned viewers who place several calls... engage the brain. You'll be amazed at its innate talent to figure simple things out.
@\'Tiseye - because perhaps its an uncommon event?? As in the last 8 months I've been in Layton this is the first time HAFB did this.. almost thought something big happened
The problem wasn't so much the night flying, by all means .. but how about much later in the evening after I'm already asleep or early in the morning; not when I'm _trying to get to sleep_.
@Justin_b31 - Once it's dark, a few times a month, you can hear the jets overhead. Just last week, outside in the hot tub at about 10, there were some jets flying.
Last night wasn't a big shocker to us. We've lived in Layton for 5 years now. I'm just thankful my son has learned to sleep through it.
@Justin_b31 - well your goin to love the summer then!!! night flights just about every night.. you may have to get up early in the morning but I will tell you this.. the military doesnt get time to sleep on the weekends let alone sleep at night.. so if your goin to complain about loosing a few hours of sleep for one night cry me a river!!!
@Ouroboros - when you think "jets flying near an Air Force base" how _many_ are you thinking?
Try one every 20-30 seconds last night..for over an hour..I finally got to sleep after 1130 and it was still going. This by no means is normal under ANY circumstance
@Justin_b31 - Justin I live about 5 minutes from Hill and I slept like a log. I hear the jets but they aren't in my front yard. Invest in ear plugs and get over it.
For the record they aren't every 20 seconds. One comes in to land every 3-5 minutes or so, and again, it's not that loud. Even my baby slept right through it.
@Justin_b31 - ...if it's one every two to three seconds, or if it's a million every millisecond. It's an Air Force base. I've been in the service 23 years. Night training is not unusual. It's not even uncommon. What on earth is so important in Utah to as to make it a target of some other country? The temple? What could make anyone think that NORAD has scrambled the 388th to shoot down waves of enemy aircraft or hijacked flying bombs? We do have outer defense rings that are not concentric to Layton, therefore, anything that comes our way will be taken care of long before the freedom-loving, awe-inspiring citizens of Davis county need energize the adrenal glands. Trust me, if it's something Utah needs to worry about, the first indication you'll get won't be jets taking off from Hill.
@Justin_b31 - Actually Justin, flying at night is normal. You must not have lived near Hill for very long. I'll admitt that it has been a while since they have flown at night but it used to be a monthly occurance. Just know that you will get used to it when it happens and if not, Salt Lake is quiet and you can go there.
Personally I love the Jets. That is the Sound of Freedom and a sacrifice of those men flying to protect the rest of us!
@Newbie - The ladies don't fly combat aircraft. The ladies fly the tankers and transports.
In fact just recently I was flying on a Canadair regional jet (CRJ), which had a lady in both the pilot and copilot seats. It took twice as long to get to our destination, because we had to keep stopping at gas stations to ask for directions.
@Peppasensei - are you serious???? I happen to work on the flight line as a maintainer and there is at least 4-5 female f-16 pilots that I know of. and it isnt anything new, I have been here for 5 years and they were there when I got there. Please keep your sexist comments to yourself.
@Justin_b31 - "I finally got to sleep after 1130 and it was still going. This by no means is normal under ANY circumstance"
[no swearing please]are you serious if my 23 month old son could sleep through jets flying directly over us...you can...My son has no trouble going to sleep or staying asleep. It's pretty normal and if it wasn't to you so be it quit crying and be thankful they are preparing to protect you. To all you people who complain about jets flying and making noise who complain about not being able to sleep think about all the soldiers in Iraq who get no sleep....
There are always people who cry and complain over the smallest things...never happy.
@Justin_b31 - you must not live in Layton or the surrounding areas.. LOL.. man your lame for saying that.. We have the most sophisticated air force in the world, we didnt get that way by flying only when the sun was out, at least you werent in baghdad on march 16, 2003, hearing that sound then you would have something to complain about..
@Ouroboros - I've read a lot of comments on here that talk about fighter jets flying around Hill Air Force Base, and
thats not what the article was even about. There were jets flying from somewhere very far south east of the base. As in they appeared to be coming from South Central Utah. With it being such a clear night over Salt Lake I watched several of the jets fly over. They weren't just flying around the base but over the whole Salt Lake valley...
Also I thought it was great to see them fly over. I love the sound of freedom. And they weren't doing anything more than flying a straight line. They came in pairs. About 20 seconds between each other. And maybe a few minutes between each pair.
For those of you who couldn't sleep, maybe you could close your windows, suck it up, and stop crying about it.
@supersonic57 - Ahh, that makes sense. People in Salt Lake are not used to the jets since they dont usually fly that way. Thanks for the info and welcome to what Davis County hears every day. Don't you Love it!! I Do!!
@Derick S. - It is unusual to have them flying over Salt Lake City all night. Mabye tonight they can fly over North Ogden for you. We wouldn't want you to feel left out.
@typicaloffice.com - The reason you didn't notice them 1 mile away from the base was that they were flying overhead about 60 miles to the South. Though with the updated story I wonder what the base commanders define as "urban" when they say they were not flying over urban areas. I was near downtown Salt Lake and saw them flying directly overhead . Maybe it is time to get those commanders some new maps, my goodness how Salt Lake City has grown in the last 150 years. Though I'd have to admit my largest concern about them flying over our urban area was the thought of what would happen if the duct tape holding together the flying equivalent a 25 year old Pinto were to suddenly fail. The result would undoubtedly be very messy and unfortunate.
@Tadhlt - Dude you are truly a clown if you think that our F-16's are held together with duct tape. If you actually stopped and thought "I'm concerned about those old fighter jets flying over an urban area" then you really need to get a life. For you to equate a F-16 (still one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world) to a 25 year old Pinto is a kick in the n^%$ to every maintaner who spends 12 to 16 hour days and nights in some of the worst weather imaginable ensureing that the F-16 remains the best maintained, most reliable fighter aircraft to ever defend a nation. Once you sir walk in their shoes then you will have earned the right to evaluate the quality of their product. Until then I suggest you head back to your comfortable office or nice warm condo and just be thankful that there are men and women who are brave enough to endure extreme conditions ensureing those aircraft are able to keep you save.
anyone who lives close to the base and reads the newspaper sufficiently to see headlines, will know that Hill AFB always announces to the press that they will be conducting night flying during specific dates. If KSL had to respond to it's viewers requests for info, they should have been paying attention to what the base told them weeks ago. A bunch of idiots.
If you don't like the sound of Air Force jets then do not move near an Air Force Base. People move in where something is already existing and then begin to complain about it. Maybe those who do not like the sound of jets should complain to their city or county officials for allowing housing near the flight paths. Those jets are just part of the sound of freedom.
my place is right under the flight path, i slept fine. you begin to not even notice the sounds. fly during the night or day, i don't have a problem with either.
I thought we were all under attack last night. The constant sound was freaking me out and I feared that I would never see another day with my wife again. It is good to have some answers.
@James F. - I live at least ten blocks away from HAFB and the jets flewoverhead and around us for at least two hours. I wondered what I had done wrong, because I felt personally threatened.
@Barbara S. - Personally threatened? Personally? Lady you have some serious issues if the aircraft that fly over your house every day did so at a different hour. Personally threatened,,,,,,,,that's funny.
Best comment to the whole story. You should be outside saluting them as they fly over your neighborhood with as much respect as the flag should be shown and the rumbling should mock the feeling of pride you SHOULD be feeling that is was a jet (or 4) that woke you out of your comfortable slumber between the sheets of your plush bed in your warm bedroom not bombings and explosions & sirens waking you out of your cold hard pit that you dug yourself several months ago.
@Eas - but your comment reminded me of something I saw at a parade last summer.
There was an ROTC group that walked by with the US flag and state flag and nobody stood up or took their hats off, except one man - and that man was an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair who looked about ready to collapse. He even held his hat to his heart. It was very emotional and really very depressing to see how little most everybody else cared.
I agree with all of you who have said that we should be grateful that we have our military and those soldiers who work their rear-ends off to keep us safe!!
I live in South Weber and I did hear the sounds of the Jets. But like many others, when I hear those sounds I know that is the sound of freedom. The sound of protection. At first when I moved here the sound of the jets bothered me. I was annoyed but then I had a change of heart. I knew the men and women in those jets are training to keep America free. I hope the day never comes when I can't see fighter jets flying by or hearing them train. I am grateful for all that they do.
just because i'm middle aged doesn't mean that i have to have a MIDDLE!
This kind of reminds me of this guy who moved into my town, there were 12 acres of cow pasture and he bought 5 of the 12 and built his house and then the moron had the nerve to cry about the cow smell DUH!!! Almost as stupid as moving next to Hill and complaining about jets, or moving to Utah and complaining about Mormons!!
I'll be sure to let me new born baby know that all the noise that is keeping her up at night aren't loud jets over head, that's just the sound of Freedom! ... I'm sure she will sleep much easier.
@DownToEarth - Also make sure to let your newborn baby know that his/her parent moved close to an Air Force Base with an active figher wing that has a combat mission and has to train in all weather conditions and night conditions, and then complained that they actually performed that training. Let that child also know that their parent is an id**t for posting comments like this on KSL!
@Truthful - We don't live close to the base, we live at the edge of Farmington and Centerville. Odd that I'm an idiot, yet you are the one who assumes to know where I live and what I think. I also never complained about the training, but about the over-used term of "the sound of freedom." Is machine gun fire, grenade explosions and people screaming in pain also the "Sound of Freedom?"
@DownToEarth - Since you live in Davis County, I'm sure you understand the economic impact that Hill AFB has on your county and the State of Utah. Thousands of dedicated employees, both civilian and military, making decent wages live in your community. Without them, the economy of the entire northern Utah area would collapse. The ecomic impact of Hill AFB on the economy of Utah is in the billions of dollars per year.
Cha-ching - is that a good enough "sound of freedom?"
@DownToEarth - are still right under the flight path of the planes at Hill. Go up there and watch how they land and take off, and which way they come from. Sorry for your baby, but you chose to live where you live. Speaking from experience, your baby will get used to it.
@DownToEarth - Who do you think provided you the freedoms which you enjoy everyday? In some of the wars past, Americans died by machine gun fire and hand grenades, you think they went quietly? It sounds like you have never served in the Military and if you did, you never experienced a war zone. Your newborn sleeps well at night because the men and women who risk all and the men and women who gave all have ensured that.
Instead of complaining about your baby not sleeping well, why dont you walk up to a Service Member next time you see one and just say thank you, whether you agree with the war or not.
And in the grand scheme of things, guess what....
Farmington AND Centerville are both close to Hill.
@DownToEarth - Your sarcasim is rich, however, You are right about one thing, you should be teaching your child, when they are old enough, that the jets are the sound of freedom. As long as they are flying then I know there is less risk. Dont' be so upset by the fact that so many on here use the term "Sound of Freedom". That is their right and it looks to me that there are many patriotic and grateful people here, myself included!!
I cant believe that someone would be so put out that the phrase is used!! Just shows that you dont share the same everwhelming support of our service men and women. Your words speak Loud!!!
@DownToEarth - I Will be sure to let my husband know that when he goes in to work tonight that right before the pilots take off to ask them to be a little more quiet ... we wouldn't want anyone to not get all of their beauty sleep.
We moved here from a base where not only do you have the jets flying over all the time but when they were just running the jets and not flying it felt and sounded like a tank was rolling down the street and was about to run into your house oh and then you have those wonderful Sonic Booms...This is nothing nice and quiet compared to what we are use to. I don't even notice the sounds.
@DownToEarth - If you don't like the noise (the noise of FREEDOM by the way) you can pack you cr@p and move, if you don't like that, you can pack your cr@p again and move to France. You can get some cheese with your whine!
I can not believe some of you people. The majority of you seem to have a god head on your shoulders but a few of you are just plain rediculous. How about you think about the husbands and wives that are left home alone while their spouses are out there flying those jets. Do you not think that it is hard for us? We sacrafice EVERYDAY for you people and you have the nerve to complain about some jets flying overhead at night? I for one LOVE the sounds of the jets. I can understand how it may be annoying however hearing anyone complain makes me sick. I have had to deal with 18 months away from my husband for him to go and protect and serve your sorry "butts". You should be ashamed!
@Toni S. - Night flying is an integral part of training that pilots need to do in order to be prepared for situations that they will face in real combat. I am not bothered by the few nights that the jets fly over my house. That is part of the job for those pilots, and I gladly support them.
@Toffer - I can understand someone not knowing what is going on and wondering. Maybe even being a little startled. But to come on here and complain about it once they know what it was.....? Seriously? These men and women are training so that when they have to go overseas....they will be able to come home safely. Any training that they need to do to be safe and make it home to their families is fine with me. We have lost enough.
I have lived in the Clinton/Syracuse area all my life so the jets do not bother me. My two young children were scared the first time the jets flew over our house at 10:30 at night. I explained to them what the jets were and what they were doing. Now my 4-year old gets excited every time she hears one go over.
I am also right under the flight path for the West Desert. I remember right after 9/11 not hearing the jets, that was strange. I missed hearing them. I include them in the sounds that I love to hear.
Yes, I grew up in this area, right under the flight path, and I choose to stay.
I guess it would be strange if you weren't used to the sound. I remember my toddler wondering what those noises were and she was afraid at first, but now she sleeps right through them too. As a baby, she soon slept right through the noises.
I moved to Vegas just to be upset about the traffic so I moved to the Florida coast man I hate water, so I moved to a trailer park in Tennesse, oops there goes antoher tornado. So I guess I will finally settle down in a little city called Colorado City Utah where I hope there is nothing wrong there
This story is crazy. You live in Utah, near an Air Force base...hhhmmm....why would jets be flying? Common sense right!?!? And if you don't like hearing them at night, then move! Thanks to those jets and the military we have freedom, so maybe we all need to be less selfish and move on!
@captain kangaroo - Why in the he** would we invade Mexico? If there were anything in Mexico worth invading over, why are so many from there in such a hurry to get here?
I know or have always thought that's why HAFB has a place called the RANGE. How about using it for the night flying. It cost me 2 hours LA this morning.
@Barbara S. - They do use the range. But either way, when you are BASED as HAFB, you still have to take off to go to the range, and eventually, they have to land. Odd huh.
Lived in Layton my whole life...hardly notice them any more. And I would not trade the sound of those jets any day or night for the erie silence over Layton on Sept 11-13 2001 when they were not there.
For people who can't handle the sound from an awesome fighter jet and support aircraft, move. Move some where else and stay away. That base has been there WAY longer than most people who live by it and I hope it does well after you have left. And when you do leave, take your kids and relatives with you. I'm a native to this state and enjoy the sights and sounds of freedom.
Thank you Hill AFB,
Hamchuck13
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat the crap out of you.
Some people should come to an undisclosed air base in IRAQ and have fighters, cargo, helicopters and the occasional incoming mortar and try to get some sleep. They run 24-7.
Oh and your welcome for the right to complain.
@Gordon B. - Are you freaking kiding me?!?!? Nobody is forcing you to do anything! It's your choice to live here. it is my choice to join the military if I wish, and it is your choice to be a citizen of this nation (or not).
@Mark N. - ... when one questions the means by which they intend to "protect" us.
I was born here, and I intend to stay here, despite the thugs who don uniforms and inculcate a militarist mindset antithetical to American liberty. "Of thee I sing."
It's my natural right to transfer or keep the fruits of my labor as I see fit. It's also my natural right to defend myself.
It's anyone's right to join a military, but no one has the right to coerce tribute from any one to support that military, and passing a law doesn't make moral the practice of involuntary wealth transfer.
I just wish those who felt so strongly that I and others have to fund their war racket had the courage to attempt the confiscation of our wealth face-to-face. My prediction is that they wouldn't be able to overcome the resistance.
@Gordon B. - CHAPTER 1
As Gordon prepared to leave for his lowly job once again, as he did every night, he suspiciously peered out the front door of his rented apartment into the blackness which the "military" puppets and drones refer to as the "night". After 10 minutes of checking, Gordon finally mumbled to himself, "Good, no Black Helicopters tonight, but I know they are there, watching and waiting."
Gordon feared the "military machine" and all involved in the downfall of this great nation, but he knew that one day, yes, one day he would save them all from the tyranny which was the American public who criticized his every move. Gordan would one day be a hero, and they would all thank him for what he had done.
CHAPTER 4 (Gordon isnt much to write about)
Just as Gordon had always feared, they had come for him, and as he predicted, in the night in black helicopters. After his strange ritualistic sky checking before leaving for his lowly job at the local bar, Gordon stepped out onto his front porch. There was a chill in the air and a slight breeze, almost enough to conceal the thwopping of the rotor blades. Gordon ran, he ran like the wind. Unfortunately, the wind wasnt that strong that chilly fateful evening. As the Blackhawk fell from the sky, the Pilot did all that could be done to put it down in the middle of the street to avoid hitting any of the buildings.... right where Gordon was headed.
At the services, Gordons best friend Sam said Gordon always knew they were watching, he just didnt think they would ever try to knock.
@Gordon B. - Strictly judging you from your post Gordon B., I would say that you are a very sad and very bitter individual. I’m not sure how old you are as your age really isn’t relevant given your overall immaturity, but you do seem to have consciously made a decision long, long ago to be an abject failure in life. The good news is that not only have you embraced this decision and accepted it, but apparently you’ve also done so with a great amount of enthusiasm and zeal.
Now, at some early stage of your life, for one reason or another, you simply stopped developing normally mentally, having reached the pinnacle of your full potential (or be that as it may, all that was allotted to you by God our Father). Whether this was done in a conscious manner as a choice on your part or simply because you had achieved your highest development potential at that early point can certainly be debated, but the end result is the same, regardless. Some would label this limited development as stunted mental growth, perhaps even going so far as to refer to it as a specific type of severe mental retardation. Society has a different name for your government assistance-worthy mental affliction. We pity those who suffer from this special type of evolutionary arrest and call them “liberal.”
@Gordon B. - You are probably the same guy that told me how much better he felt knowing the fighters were up there flying around protecting the temple after 9-11...Whatever fits your current political agenda, right Gordon?
@Rich E. - That was right after I pickled a pair of GBU-38's into the Capitol Building (obviously make believe too.) Then I broke off the attack and waited for the BDA boys do their work.
Just "targets of opportunity"...
By the way...We weren't flying around protecting anyone's "temple" following 9-11. We were trying to protect you.
@Gordon B. - It's those same jets who ALLOW you to have the right to a choice. It is ungrateful slime like you, who diminish the power of freedom. Our amazing pilots NEED to train, to be the kick [no swearing please] machine they are. Did you just walk in to whatever piss ant job you have and start doing it? Or did someone have to hold your pathetic hand and TRAIN you? This is their job, and to be the best at it, they have to TRAIN!!! Your not forced to pay into anything, FREEDOM gives you the CHOICE, to RID US of your sorry [no swearing please] and move to FRANCE!!! Join the rest of the SPINELESS SLIME!!! My suggestion to HAFB, is to find Gordon B.'s house and do some night time target practice. GOD BLESS OUR BRAVE AND DEDICATED TROOPS!!!
@Gordon B. - Most days and nights I hear the sound of helicopters flying over head and guns rounds exploding. I live on a military base in California. Those sounds to me are not the only the sounds of freedom, but the sounds of men and women training to keep themselves alive in a time of combat.
I think your cowardly comment Gordon B. is putting a price tag on the brave men and women who defend you ignorance.
I will gladly have them keep “wasting resources” so when my husband leaves for is 4 tour of Iraq I know he is well trained in day time and night time situations.
@Gordon B. - If we didn't live in such a great country that affords freedom to misinformed individuals (such as you) who are allowed to express their ill informed opinions, I would have to recommend that you move to another country.
PROTECTION RACKET?????
I challenge you to walk in a dark alley and be unarmed and alone.
Every country needs some sort of protection (it's called an army), every individual needs the same sort of protection, (it's called a gun).
The world is good and bad. You gotta be ready for the bad.
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, ooh, oh oh I love to swimmmmm! - Dorey
@Gordon B. - "spending to further enrich the members of the military"
Enrich members of the military? that has got to be one of the funniest things i have ever heard. Do you have any idea what military personell get paid? I can gaurantee that if you seen the paychecks we get you would be suprised. Its bad when you are a decent rank and still qualify for WIC.
If you dont like the patriotic nature of what appears to be most of the people on this board you can move. Please, move to Mexico, Canada, Iraq, etc. Why are you still here if you hate the USA so bad. What a waste of resources, you are using my air. You act like you, personally, are paying off the national budget, and that noone else pays taxes. Guess what? I am military and I still pay taxes. Get a life.
@Andiecutiepie - I am on the same boat as you are andiecutiepie, and i know who you are, you are sweet.
I totally agree with the paychecks we get and we still qualify for WIC.
I love your comments you have been making, keep up the good work LOL
Military families have to endure a year (or more) of seperation during deployments. Families sacrifce thier loved ones to this country. Sometimes forever. A family's life is disrupted and changed. Some of our military members qualify for food stamps! And then...
You whine about too much noise at night by our jets.
You should be very, very ashamed you self-centered slug!
@Barbara S. - Bring them home? If we bring everyone home then everything we have worked for will be for nothing. If we keep the war there it cannot find its way here. Try thinking about it that way. We backed off of the middle east for a while and guess what every one remembers 9-11. They do not have a large enough army to take us head on, but they will find a way if we give them a chance.
I have lived in the Davis county area most of my life. There are times the jets get loud, but it’s not annoying to me. The other day I was on my cell phone outside when a jet flew over and at one point I couldn’t hear the other person talk so I had to ask them to hold for a few moments but of course it went away. And yes it does wake you up at night at times, but it’s never kept me up all night, and besides that I am so used to it usually I sleep right through it. It just comes and goes and it's not as big of a deal as everyone is making it.
Honestly I would rather hear jets flying over me at night from AMERICAN fighter pilots than from TERRORISTS attacking our country. Which would you rather have?
If the bad guys would only fight from 8am-5pm, monday-friday, our guys wouldn't have to train in the night. So go file a complaint with Bin Laden if you're offended by night training.
I noticed a few references to "sonic booms" here. What you're hearing are NOT "sonic booms." You get a blast of noise when the plane turns its tail towards you, but no aircraft (including military ones) are permitted to exceed the speed of sound over the continental United States. Nor would there be any reason to do so when training in F-16s.
@mqbitsko - My husband says they are not allowed here but where we just moved from they (Sonic Booms) happened several times a day...our base was out in the middle of the desert with a few towns near by. The first thing you hear you about when you get to Edwards AFB is about the sonic booms...
@mqbitsko - yes the can, but there are only certain places the can do sonic booms in the U.S, i hear them out in Dugway all the time, an some air shows allow them too
you are stinky pooh poohs. you were dumb enough to post a story where you misspelled hill as "hiff" and you removed the comments... Are your egos so fragile that you had to delete the "hiff" comments? oh well jets at night... can't sleep... ksl can't spell... delete posts making fun of the poor spelling and editing.
I have this completely crazy idea for those of you that CHOSE to move in next to an AIR FORCE BASE.....
MOVE....
Guess what, the war doesn't stop when the sun goes down. As a previous poster stated, that is the sound of your freedom that you are complaining about. What if our Pilots trained like the pilots from Iraq? We probably would not have taken the skies so quickly, ya think? We are the most powerful Nation on the planet for a reason, because our Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen all train, DAY AND NIGHT.
[no swearing please]. I had no idea that there would be Pilots training at night at an AIR FORCE BASE. You chose to live there, so quit whining or move somewhere that does not have F16's 100 yards from your back door. I used to live next to Hill and could not deal with the jets anymore, so check this out.... I moved.... to Tooele of all places. No jets... its awesome.
One, i am a crew chief on one of those noisy freedom birds. Anyone want to take my place in Iraq feel free. What goes on at this base is really not the publics concern, safety of the community is. Yes we have flew night missions in the last 8 monthes, trust me! Simulation is like driving a car at the arcade compared to the real thing so yes our pilots do need to do this. The reason why it's so loud is because of the low clouds that came in with the storm last night which ricochets the exhaust noise off the clouds. Sorry for your inconvenience, please feel free to enlist any day now. Until then, opions mean nothing to us men and women who do the dirty work!!!!!! Thanks for all the supporter comments fellas......
@F-16crewchief - i LOVE jets, all of them (too many to list) an i love lookin up an seein them fly through the sky, i see F-16's and a few F-22's (probably yours) all the time an it never gets old, an i support the Air Force every step of the way, great job, your the reason we own the sky an always will
@F-16crewchief - I have a brother who lives close to the base and love hearing the jets when I visit him, so does my son. I'm sure all the people on here complaining have never been outside the US to see what freedom means to our country.
For the person who commented on ladies not flying combat aircraft!!! What world are you from cause whoever gave you that info is definitely not from America. I have been blessed to work with some of the best fighter pilots in the world, women! If you question this, look on the Air Force Thunderbird website and see for yourself. They perform under combat just as well as any man. Ooh yeah, ur not from this world. The Thunderbirds are the premier aerial demonstration team in the world!!! You have to be an ace and the very best to be on the team. Go to an airshow and see for yourself!!!! Or sit in that seat and google away.....
@F-16crewchief - My hubby was a Thunderbird, and left just before the first female pilot joined. I have to agree, they are the best demo team, and a great bunch to be around too.
To all of you that are crying because the fighter noise is keeping you awake, Think about laying awake while enemy fire is all around you and you can't move. You pray for the Air Cover.
To you that don't think the troops should train at night, please send a memo to the enemy and tell them you close at 5.
Think of this, you are pinned down, behind enemy lines, it is getting dark and you don't hear those jets. Or you are in the same situation and you hear the jets but they are coming at you because they haven't had enough training.
These men and women aren't doing this because they want to. They are doing this because they have to in order to protect your right to post your ridiculous rants on this site.
Don't like it? Pack your Bags and get thy rear end out of this country!

I heard these jets last night. There were multiple fighters. They were flying low. They punched out with after burners. They were on serious business. So Guess what folks. Fighters do not train over populated cities like SLC. They do not train at night. They do not train during the day. They typically train over unpopulated areas only. Hill could hardly find the means to get fighters to do fly-overs of SLC during the days of 9-11.
So what does this mean? It means Hill AFB officials are lying to you.
Think about it. US fighter jets do not train over cities and these guys were all over the place not just up in Layton as has been commented.
They were scrambled after something. And what do you think they were after?
Chinese MIGs, Russian bombers, hot air balloons, swamp gas?
Obviously not. That only leaves one alternative. UFO's. In this case, there is no other realistic reason to scramble fighters over a populated area. Our little friends from space are popping in for visits. Get used to it. And don't believe the official spin about rotational night training.
@justintime5 - ...wow, I hope you are joking, there is no way that you are that much about a conspiracy theory. Trust me we have a lot of jets and they are going over Salt Lake City to, get this, get to the other side, wow what a concept. I dont know how much you get out but the world does not drop off after the valley. Like I said we have a lot of aircraft, they werent flying around SLC just over it, a lot of different times with different jets.
@justintime5 - Because juding from your post, you flopped down yesterday.
F-16's from Hill train 6 days a week, Sunday usually being the only day they don't fly.
Usually they take off to the south and land to the south. Last night weather forced them to land from the south to the north, thus they went over the east bench of SL.
Military regulations REQUIRE the use of afterburners on takeoff. It's standard operating procedure.
You know, maybe you didn't just arrive on earth, maybe you're hitting the drugs a bit too hard....would make sense since you seem to think that there's UFO's, and, that fighters just magically appear over unpopulated areas to train.
Oh, and just for the record, CAP patrols were flown daily afte 9-11...they had no problems putting planes in the air, you just probably weren't quite sober enough to notice.
You know, last night, I too was awakened by the strong sounds of the aircrafts. I live less than a mile away from the runway. I am COMPLETELY fine with it awakening me.
However, my concern was not “how could they do this late at night”… my concern was how unusual it was to hear so many flights, so intensively, and so late in the evening. I am sorry, but I have only been here 10 months. And, since I have lived here, I have not heard that MUCH chaos with flights. I appreciate how I have been educated today regarding the possibilities of training extensively at night. Yet, last night was very alarming to me. I did not have those pieces.
What I DID know is that we had all heard the news of the confusion with missiles sent to Taiwan from Hill Air Force Base. Plus, the high concerns of how the pentagon is now having to face this major issue (hopefully, with no repercussions – who is to say that China is not looking for an excuse). I also heard how the Air Force base could be in jeopardy when it is time for them to be considered for renewal.
Thus, with the breaking news yesterday and having unsettled feelings regarding it, AND THEN hearing the high number of powerful aircrafts last night....Gosh, dog it, I became more unsettled and scared. Sorry, I am new to living by an Air Force base. Sue me.
There was even at one point the most HORRIFIC sound from one jet. So… I turned on the news, concerned with what was going on… and they did not have anything to report, which made me feel more at ease. Obviously, the activity was not noteworthy. However, this morning, I finally did not feel alone when it was reported on the news that others were highly concerned.
Once again, I do NOT have a problem with flights at nighttime or during the day. I adore soldiers and the gifts they give our country. I sleep with a soldier every night. I KNOW how they feel and what they fight for….
I am an army wife, husband is away. They can fly all night as far as I am concerned. Yet, with the situations that arose yesterday… Why, yes, I was alarmed. In the world we live in… We can never be so sure. So, those of you who “know it all”…. Thankfully, you were right. This time.
I do thank KSL for giving some of us, some peace of mind.
@Jenny37415 - Of course you know that I am in T.N. because this is
Tanner. Your story is so brilliant... very enthusiastic. But now lets get down to buisness, you were awakened by horrific sounds of jets... so these jets were...? The clear answer sall be that certain planes had a special something... the complex jets were scary shall I say if not correct correct me immeatedetly thus the conclusion of the jets is what you heard was what you said the sounds were sxcary and the jets had a job to comploete now the end of the conclusion from me.
your nephew, TANNER
P.s.uncle mark said he wanted to be there for you to comfort you and the he is madly in love with you and misses you bunches?.,_+)(*&^%$#@!~
Until the philosophy which holds one race superior & another inferior is finally and permanently discredited & abandoned there will be war. until there are no longer first class & second class citizens of any nation. Until the color of a mans skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes there will be war. Until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all, without regard to race there will be war. That until that day, The dream of lasting peace, World citizenship, Rule of international morality will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be persued but never attained now everywhere is is war.
Since everyone is so interested in complaining about the USAF, let me throw my two cents in. What is up with Utah drivers? Is there a tax I forgot to pay to own the road? I've been stationed many places around the world and this has to be the worst in regards to local drivers.
@Jason R. - You are sooooooooooooooo right!! I'd feel safer most mornings if I could commute to my office in an F-16!! The speeding, unsafe actions and tailgating are awful here...not to mention cell phone abuse and all of the other distractions.
@Jason R. - They just do not MOVE over! They totally take over the roads. They do not drive at an even pace. Fast lane, slow lane??? They do not let people in... They do not look over to see if someone needs anything.
I guess this is the way people drive while living in a bubble.
All the Apaches and Blackhawks fly at about 100ft all over West Jordan, at all hours, every day. I'd prefer F-16s...at least they're real aircraft, and not whirling controlled crashes ;)
I am with the 211th AVN GSAB out of Airport #2 and am a crew chief on the UH60 Blackhawks. We NEVER fly less than 1500 feet over residential areas and are under strict orders to stay within strict corridors to get to our training areas which are well outside residential areas. Maybe the helicopter is nothing more than a brick with a fan on top but you have to understand that the Navy and the AF usually have a "hard deck" which is a minimal altitude for combat maneuvers that must not be violated. In "Top Gun" the hard deck was 10,000 feet out of Miramar whose base elevation was near sea level. For attack helicopters there is no "hard deck" because we do combat maneuveres within 50 feet of ground level. There is no margin for error. These maneuvers will take place only in remote locations nowhere near residential areas so you can rest assured that we will do our best not to bother you. We pose no more threat to you than "Chopper 5".
Also remember that while the F16 is like the nuclear weapon that can take out an entire area, The AH64 Apache and the UH60 Blackhawk are really like the Brain Surgeon who operates "up close and personal" to take out precision targets and deliver equipment and supplies that the F16 cannot deliver. This is not to downgrade the mission of the F16. Each aircraft has its mission and capabiities. Thank God we have both the options. Again, it is the sound of freedom. Take care.
@BozoHog - Hey BozoHog...I was joking, although I'll be you a beer that the Blackhawks and Apaches are lower that 1500 AGL over my house, but the 100ft was certainly joking.
I also -do- love the Apache and Blackhawk, but being ex-USAF, I have to insult helicopters as a matter of form.
Reading most of these posts is somewhat disheartening.
I love the sound of freedom. If the sound of aircraft waking me up at night is so our military can train to protect our freedoms, I welcome it!! Get over it people! You can watch your movie another time or catch up on your sleep on the weekend. Wow, are we spoiled Americans or what?
We live in West Point and the noise at night is a constant every night. We are use to it. If it is such a bother to people maybe they need to choose somewhere else to live. We are lucky if we get to hear the news at 10 because of the Jets flying over. People need to be grateful that we have the Armed Forces. If it wasn't for the military you wouldn't have your chance to voice your opinion.
For those of you who say your a TRUE AMERICAN you really should realize how lucky we are to have pilots who take the time to train and defend our country. If your goin to complain about not being able to watch a movie oh well!! Get out of UTAH!!!
When I moved to Ogden I hated listening to the planes day and night, but I got used to it because what they're up there for is to train to protect us! Salt Lake residents are spoiled with their quiet neighborhoods. Buck up and deal with the noise for a few nights. I can hear the planes right now and I appreciate the sacrifice they are making and the sacrifice their families are making! DEAL WITH IT!
Okay folks...instead of griping and complaining about the lack of sleep You got last night, consider what the soldiers got in other third world countries protecting your right and freedom to B*&@!* and complain on this very forum. I dont get bothered one bit by that noise....That...is the sound of freedom!!!
Next time the Air Force needs to fly a night mission I think it would be a fabulous idea if all of you that are complaining about the noise walked the bombs in. You think that's a fair trade for quiet? I think so.
I could make you a nice long list of all the "civilian" noises that annoy me, and wake me and my family up in the night if you'd like. Perhaps I should start calling KSL to complain too!
Listen to all these salt lake county babies, they seem to whine about everything. i cant imagine them living up in Davis county. Those F-16's are the verry reason you all get to have your cushy little lives and why you even get the opportunity to complain!!! For those who don't know they constantly do night flights so it's not like this is something new .
So you miss a few hours of sleep a few times a year. Big deal. Do you know how many hours of sleep that these soldiers miss when they have mortars over their base in the middle of the night. These guys are training to be able to fight for you. So instead of complaining why dont you thank them.
Thanks to all of you at Hill Air Force Base and throughout the world serving our country. I live in Layton and love to hear and see the planes fly day or night. The sound is but a very small price we pay as citizens for what these fine men and women do for us. Thanks for our United States Air Force ... keep flying day or night.
You people in Salt Lake County really need to grow up. WOW!!! A few nights of getting woken up. Boo Hoo. That is small price to pay for freedom. Try living up in Davis or Weber county where we have to hear it day and night. I remember living up on H.A.F.B when they had an area called Area C. The Air Force had to pay us to live in that area, since the flight line was right in our back yards. In other words we got to hear the loud decibels when they took off and landed. We all up here have gotten use to it. It is nice to know that our military is doing its' job in keeping our freedom available to us.
What Kills me is Hill Brings so many jobs to utah and with out thoose jets there is no reason for hill... with out hill Utah would be in a lot of trouble!
Violate her privacy HA with out those fighters and those pilots you would not even have the right to complain on tv.
Even right now as i sit here and listen to the jets it makes me happy!!! and i live RIGHT next to hill so no matter where they fly in at i hear them and i LOVE THEM!!!
How Dare any of YOU complain about being disturbed by the night flying jets!!! Do you have any concept that this country is engaged in WAR and those pilots and crews NEED to train in order to protect your [no swearing please] so you can sleep comfortably all snug in your beds! How about all the families of those pilots and other military members fighting in this war....how much sleep do you think mothers, daughters, sons, fathers, sisters, brothers and husbands and so on get while worrying about their loved one? Great way to support those who put their life on the line to protect YOU and sometimes give their life to protect YOU! That sound you hear overhead is the sound of FREEDOM!!!!!!!! Suck it up and shut up!
I am sorry I am not usually like this but all I have to say is WAAAA!!! I grew up just off the flight line and that"noise" may be loud but that is the noise that's KEEPING YOU FREE!!!! I think a little inconvience is well worth the freedom!!!! I think we all should be great full for it.
Are you kidding me? Complaining about the jet noise for one night for three whole hours? Perhaps you would rather deploy to Iraq for six months or a year, sleep with kevlar on and to the sound of mortars being lobbed at you. That certainly would give you the right to complain(although most US soldiers don't.) Until then enjoy the sound of freedom flying over your house and your right to talk to the news about your movie, surround sound and privacy being interrupted.
I have lived in Weber and Davis counties and missed the sounds of the jets when I lived in Cache Valley for a short time. I now live in West Point and smile everytime I see or hear the jets flying over. We've always said with pride that they are the "Sounds of Freedom". We never complain, you just get used to it and adjust accordingly. I'd rather do that, knowing that those pilots are training to practice the skills needed to defend our country and freedoms if needed. Fly on and let freedom ring!
We used to live in a landing path near Hill Air Force Base with a lot of night flights. It really didn't take much to get used to it. Why not be grateful for all they do for us.
Now we live near railroad tracks and a freeway. Humm, we chose to live here, again grateful, but because goods are being transported to benefit us all.
Maybe they could move to a farm to get away from it all... oh yeah, farmers work to and use machinery and oh yeah, animals make noise too. Isn't that part of our world?
I just heard the news report about the flight training last night, I have to say that I was shocked by the ladies comment about her poor movie being interupted. I lived on Whidbey Island, with a large Naval Air Station, we had a great bill board with a great "slogan" "Pardon our Noise, it the sound of Freedom" yes, it is our freedom those jets project, they can fly all night if they want as far as I concerned.
It sure is good thing that it was only jets flying over your house and not bombs going off outside your windows or gunfire shooting through your house. Maybe you ought to go over in the war zone and spend sometime feering for your life, I bet then you wouldn't worry too much about your sleep or that movie. I live out here in Tooele County and laid in bed listening to the jets and within hours was up with one of my children that is under the age of 5 and then was up again with another child and then another. I was probably able to get about 2 hours of consistent sleep last night, but not once did I complain about the jets. You people that are complaining get over yourself and be thankful. You make me so MAD!!!!
I agree with those that ay the sound is welcome. Shame on KSL for making sound like the majority of people were put out or upset by this. When clearly the majority support and welcome the sound and inconvenience, if there actually is any.
I can't believe people have the audacity to complain about the very mechanism which protects their freedoms.
i would rather listen to some F-16's fly over once in a while (i would be fine with everyday) even at night than have to worry about living in a war zone. these guys and girls are training so that they can go fight for YOUR freedom so you can sit home and cry about "it kept me up till midnight" at least you get to sleep in your own bed a lot of these pilots are probly goin to or have been to iraq so all of you that are compolaining DEAL WITH IT OR MOVE TO IRAQ. then you will be wishing you were hearing F-16's instead of gun fire and bombs.
@Josh W. - i used to live right by airport #2 and i miss the sound of the apaches and blackhawks. i now live in sandy and anytime i hear a jet or heli i stop what i am doing and run out to watch it go by.
I live under the landing pattern and understand the importance of these flights. I hope they keep irritating you. I HEAR THESE EVERYDAY AND DON'T CARE!!!!!!!!!!!
GET A LIFE
I saw the news story about Hill Air Force Base's training. I am proud and grateful that we are able to have men and women willing and able to train and serve our country. I can't understand why certain people just don't get it. They seem to be so wrapped up in their own little world, that they can't see the greater good that is being accomplished by our military. Sure, those jets can be a little noisey. Would you prefer terrorists detonating bombs in homes and anarchy in the streets. Lets all please pull our heads out and let our military do their job. Protect us - and yes, this just might require some training.
We really think that those who are complaining about the noise from the F-16's should stand back and really appreciate what these planes stand for and what these pilots and their ground crews are doing for us. It is easy to complain from the quiet comforts of our homes because the U.S. military assures us the freedom to do so. Next time these planes fly overhead, perhaps these complainers should get down on their knees and say a prayer of gratitude. As parents of a Navy Plane Captain assigned to an F-18 Hornet squadron, we are deeply grateful for the men and women who are flying overhead and we thrill at the sight and sound of them.
God Bless our Navy and Air Force Airmen!!!
My response is to the individuals who complained on your news broadcast.
It's so unfortunate your privacy was invaded for 4 hours. And the comment of abuse of authority, is completely out of line.
Those men and woman pilots sacrifice they're lives every day for your freedom. You need to learn some respect for the work they do. So next time they fly over head pay them the respect they deserve. Stand outside and wave the to them, while feeling proud to be an American. They may be the ones chasing the enemy from your backyard. I don't think you'll complain then.
Be glad you live in a country that remains free and deal with the noise!
First off I would like start by saying that in the great land of the USA we have the RIGHT to say how we feel.
So after making that point its my turn! The reason you can sit in your home and "complain" and be bothered by the "noise" is actually irony. The sound you hear is "FREEDOM". You have the right to complain because there are men and women defending the Red, White, and Blue for you, the chronic complainer, that complains about freedom. I am sorry if I offend any person or group, but I am appalled that some of you have the audacity to even consider the thought of complaining about the freedoms you have and the right you have because of the annoying "NOISE". I don't see anyone of you out there making it safe to have a home, watch a movie, have a family, and do the things that you, the COMPLAINER have taken for granted! We live in the USA for many reasons and this situation is one reason why you the COMPLAINER live here, cause if you lived in any other country you would be shot for even questioning what the people that protect you are doing to do their job. And that is to protect the "COMPLAINER"
Regards,
One who served and is sick of Americans not appreciating what we all have died and fought for!!
@Lisa S. - AMEN! I thank you for your service! I agree that it is a sad day when we camplain about our troops training to save the sorry lives of people who are idiots! Loved your comments! Not all Americans are as stupid and selffish as the ones who have the nerve to complain!
3rd teacher
I think everyone who complains about these trivial things, (such as losing sleep over training fighter jets)need a swift kick in the butt and not be so bloody complacent and take their freedom for granted.
I'm all for night training, and anything that can give our troops the upper hand when it comes to keeping us safe.
For all of you who are still complaining, earplugs are $1.50 at your local drugstore.
I for one enjoy the roar of the jets 24/7.
Those fighters give me a great sense of security and of freedom. Thank you.
Keep 'em burnin Hill!
FYI......Hill Airforce Base is one of the top Air Force Bases for all training and you all should remember why you can have your freedom here in this country it is sure not because any of you are out there on the front lines fighting....... I lived in Ogden for many years and I loved that sound of freedom! All you whiners and complainers need to get a can of man/woman and a straw and suck it up!! It is because of those training missions and tests that our Airforce is the strongest in the world and if you dont like that then tough luck!
It is sure easy to sit in the comfort your lounge chair and critisize the military for disrupting your normally quiet night. I wonder what the men and women fighting your comfortable life would say as they lay in a pile of dirt, and are awakened night after night by the sounds of gun fire??? It makes me sick to even think that people complain! I am sure our military would trade you places anytime you complainers want to get out of the lounge chair and do some real sacrificing!!!
Gosh, what a bunch of whiners. Maybe you would rather have your precious sleep interrupted by the sound of some of the IED's going off in Bagdad?
I spent three months sleeping in our tents at the 452nd Combat Support Hospital on the flight line at Bagram Army Airfield, Afghanistan,in 2004. Just try sleeping with a Navy A6 or a Marine Harrier taking off less than 200 yards from where your sleeping area is located. Let me tell you, that sound is the sound of freedom. Thank your lucky stars you have the opportunity to hear that sound. Or for the ladies that are offended by that sound, would you rather wear a Burqua and be required to walk ten feet behind your man (if you have a man) or never go out alone if you don't have a man?
I am going back to Iraq in seven weeks. I suggest to you to welcome that sound of our fighter jets that you hear late at night and remember that folks like me are training every day to try to stay alive during our rotations overseas so you can sleep without the fear of terrorism in the continental US.
@BozoHog - Please note! There are those of us who love our military! We are so proud of you, and all of those willing to sacrifice so much for a bunch of ungrateful people. That is the true measure of a man! One who will stand at all costs, even for the idiots who complain! I am sorry you even had to hear all the BS! I feel ashamed sometimes of where our priorities lie as a US people! GO TROOPS! THNAK YOU!
@3rdteacher - I say "thank YOU" because it is the support of the majority of US citizens that make it worth it to me to go back for my third combat tour. Thanks. Z
Ok, just so happens I was in a hotel right near the end of the runway last night for a school conference. I didn't have a problem with it. I observed their flight patters as well, and you clould tell they were trying to be nice. They didn't take long approaches like a commercial airline would. The would drop right down, come in short, and drop gear. Would you perfer they line up approach all the way down the Salt Lake Valley?
People who complain about the noise top the list of stupid things I have heard in a long time, and I go to high school (thats really saying something there)!
I agree with posters like "Josh W." (see above) as well.
Amen to freedom, keep 'um roarin', and let God speed!
Oh, and to the one who turned up the surround sound, that was real smart! Let's make more noise and see if we can wake up the normal people who can handle it!
To all the men and women who fight to keep us safe. Also for all those military spouses for standing behind there significant other 100%, and holding the fort down while they are serving. God bless
Thanks
An Air force wife
i agree with Full draw on his/her view. now i can also remember as a little kid staying at my grandparents house that just happens to be right under the regular landing path of the base, and every time we heard a plane landing (F-16 C141 C130 not that any of you know what these airplanes are), we would run outside to where we could see it and stare in aww, even now when i go visit them its the same thing. They are training to defend our freedoms, its not often we get to see the men and women flying these aircraft that we are paying for to defend us. After 9-11 i sleept great knowing that Hill Air Force base was only a few minutes from where i live AND FULL OF F-16S AT THAT.
I wonder what sounds the terrorists make, and if they just work 9 to 5. I am sure they are a lot more respectful of our rights and privacy. That my friends is the sound of freedom.
According to William Lind's 3/26/08 column Operation Cassandra at Antiwar.com (google it), he states:
[...] The State Department, OSD, the intelligence agencies, the Army, and the Marine Corps are all opposed to war with Iran. Of the armed services, only the Air Force reportedly is in favor, seeking an opportunity to show what air power can do. As always, it neglects to inform the decision-makers what it cannot do.
The purpose of this column is not to warn of an imminent assault on Iran, though personally I think it is coming, and soon. Rather, it is to warn of a possible consequence of such an attack. Let me state it here, again, as plainly as I can: an American attack on Iran could cost us the whole army we now have in Iraq.
Lots of people in Washington are pondering possible consequences of an air and missile assault on Iran, but few if any have thought about this one. The American military's endless "we're the greatest" propaganda has convinced most people that the U.S. armed forces cannot be beaten in the field. They are the last in a long line of armies that could not be beaten, until they were.
------
Sound of Freedom, yeah right. It's more like the Sound of American State Terrorism.
When the attack on Iran happen, expect to hear from Russia. Shanghai Cooperation Organization will deliver a crushing response. The attack on Iran-Syria for Israel is the point of no return, mark my word.
Iran have the right to develop nuclear power according to Non-Proliferation Treaty which USA also signed. Israel, Pakistan and India did not, yet USA is friendly with the three while being aggressive in hostility towards Lebanon, Iran and Syria.
Attacking Iran will be the cause of World War III, and America will be much, much worse off while Israel face annihilation by the torrent of missiles launched by Iran.
You people who sing "Sound of Freedom" are sheep being led to slaughter. The Bush-Cheney Neocon White House is packed with traitors.
@Lee - Both of you are not only deluded but extremely ignorant.
This is typical attitude of Americans who cannot handle the truth as I know it from studying geopolitics. You, on the other hand, just laugh and proceed to mock me.
To quote Thomas Jefferson, "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."
I produced the video on YouTube called "CENTCOM Admiral Fallon resigns. The war on Iran-Syria is on". Watch the video and see how you remain ignorant to your peril.
When the war comes to Iran, there will be a massive blowback. Like you think that's lucid.
@Aaron H. - Do you really think you are "enlightened"??? (I know you truly do, as I did at one time too. I've been there too. But, I look back and now I laugh at myself with embarrasment)
That is so very funny :)
We used to say the same thing about being elingtened in the 60's when we were stoned out our minds and hanging around at Woodstock and the other places we all thought were about "peace, love and rock & roll". So, I'm guessing that's where you are at in your life...
The only difference between the two of us intellectually is that I *know* I'm ignorant.
You on the other hand are a poster child for those who are "educated" beyond their common sense. Toss those political texts, boy! A western might be more to your capacity, and you'd learn something too.
What a decadent and self-indulgent society we have become when we complain about the noise of military jets being audible during our surround sound movie. Grow up! We heard the jets too, and rejoiced at the blessing of living in a strong and free nation. How can you enjoy this freedom and complain about the means by which it comes?
Thanks-- A grateful Partaker of Freedom
Every morning utah and its "want to be perfect life" or should i say want to be perfect image gets up pour's a cup of coffee and takes a shower, then heads out for its morning commute and other's put there children on a bus for school knowning they will be safe. Everyone he is so raped up in what they think is a perfect life and is all stepford wife wanna be's and everyone attends church and everyone is perfect. The news reporter says at the end of his session "For now you will have to deal with it." Deal with it? Are you freaking serious! if it wasn't for the 21 soldiers that have dead for UTAH or the other thousands that have died so you can live what you think is the perfect life, YOU WOULD HAVE NOTHING!! So what your Freaking Movie gets interuped or you can't sleep till twelve, how about BOMBS going off, you can forget your morning commute because most of utah will be under rubble. NO SCHOOL for kids today because it just got blowen up, or a school bus that was targeted as a car bomb blows up and your children are now all dead, getting no sleep for days because, the war is now for real are your front door!!! starving because you have little food and water. Those pilots that your complaining about are practicing for War. so they can fly and not got KILLED, leaving there families behind and maybe FOREVER. Utah only Supports what doesn't get in there way of a perfect life and there life style. if it wasn't for these men and women you would have NOTHING!! like My mother said those jets you hear going over your house is FREEDOM, PROTECTION and LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UTAH NEEDS A WAKE UP CALL TO WAR. YOU GO TO CHURCH ALL THE TIME AND YOUR SO PREFECT BUT ISN'T BEING SELFISH A SIN? TO SELFISH TO THINK OF WHAT THOSE PILOTS GO THROUGH TO SAVE YOU, THEN YOU DAM MOVIE. EVERYTIME YOU HEAR THOSE JETS YOU SHOULD BE PRAYING FOR THEM, THERE LOVED ONES, AND YOUR FREEDOM, NOT COMPAINING BECAUSE ITS A DISRUPTION. PLEASE grow up utah and see the world for what it really is! UTAH SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF ITS SELF. THERE KSL DO A NEWS REPORT ABOUT THAT THE TRUTH IS.....AND WHAT REALLY SHOULD BE SAID NOT WHAT IGNORANT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY!
@Amberbrown287 - Do you know what your talking about? First you talk about "Utah and it's want to be perfect life" - obviously a shot at those who are LDS. But you don't know much because of your comment "gets up pour's a cup of coffee" well that would not be very perfect now would it? Also, the vast majority of Utah is very supportive of the Military. At one point Utah had the highest deployment of military for "Operation Iraqi Freedom". There are those few like the old lady who complained about her total invasion of privacy. I don't know who to be more concerned about her or you?
By-the-way, I've lived in Layton for 17 years just east of the flight path. I didn't even know about the flights until I saw the story on KSL, neither did my wife. Usually it is noisier when they take off to the south than when they are landing from the south.
Too bad for the lady it was not the B1 bomber. When those things take off from Hill (very rarely) my garage door shakes. I love seeing the jets.
My next door neighbor was an F-16 pilot. He used to buzz the house once in a while. Then died in a jet crash a few years ago - sure do miss hearing the sound of his jet!!!!
Better to hear the sound of a jet fighter, than to watch a terrorist blowup your home. Remember the planes were there before the houses. So people suck it up and quite your whining. This is a small price we pay for our freedom. Besides, Hill AFB Consitutes Northern Utah's economy.
@SivartiBikes - SUE THEM BECAUSE YOUR STITCHES GOT IRRITATED. IF IT WASN'T FOR THAT JET NOT EVEN STITCHES COULD PUT YOU BACK TOGETHER AFTER A BOMB BLOWS UP YOUR HOUSE!! INFACT I HOPE IT DOES!! YOU LOVE YOUR COUNTRY YA OK!! BUT YET YOUR TRYING TO SUE IT FOR KEEPING YOUR FREEDOM!? WHATEVER UTAH STOP BEING SELF IGNORANT PEOPLE!
@SivartiBikes - Please just leave the country all together. We dont need you here nor do we want you here. People like you are so [no swearing please]sue happy that you will look for any reason to get a quick buck. Get a job and make your own money. I think I speak for a lot of people on this board when I say LEAVE OUR COUNTRY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND MIGHT I ADD. WHILE YOUR TRYING TO SLEEP NEXT TO YOUR LOVE ONE BUT CAN'T BECAUSE OF THE NOISE WHAT ABOUT THOSE MILITARY THAT MISS THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF THERE CHILDS LIFE AND MISSED THE BIRTH BECAUSE THERE GETTING SHOT AT TO PROTECT YOUR BUTT. THESE MILITARY AREN'T SLEEPING AT HOME BY THERE LOVED ONES LIKE YOU! THERE DIEING AT 18, MY FRIEND 16 JUST WENT TO BASIC WITH THERE PARENTS SIGNATURE TO FIGHT AND DIE FOR YOU,, UUUMM SHE'S STILL A CHILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 AND IF MY OTHER COMMENT DOESN'T GET APPROVED THAT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT THEY DON'T WANNA HEAR THE TRUTH AND DON'T REALLY SUPPORT THE WAR
Come on people. I have listened to the jet noise day and night my whole life. Get over it people it's not that bad. C'mon you were soo disturbed in your home. THE JET NOISE IS THE SOUND OF FREEDOM. Without that noise, you might not be able to sleep in silence in your nice little home. So just chill out and quit complaining.
SUE THEM BECAUSE YOUR STITCHES GOT IRRITATED.
@Jimmybackus B. - I'M MEAN. NO HUNNY I SPEAK THE TRUTH AND ITS ABOUT TIME YOU AND ALL THOSE IGNORANT SELF CENTERED PEOPLE REALIZE FAST THAT THIS IS WAR, THIS COUNTRY IS AT WAR TO KEEP YOU SAFE. I'M FROM CANADA AND WASN'T FOR WAR TILL I REALIZED THAT IF IT WASN'T FOR THOSE DIEING CHILDREN OUT THERE THAT HAVN'T BEN BEGUN TO LIVE YOU WOULDN'T EVEN BE ABLE TO POST YOUR COMMENT CALLING ME A MEANIE
To the complainers about the noise from the HAFB F-16's.
The sound overhead that so annoyed and inconvenienced you and that you perceived as such an abuse of power, is the sound of American men or women training to defend your right to be a self-centered, self-righteous moron.
Turn off your TV and send an email or letter to a service man or woman stationed away from home, family and friends.Better yet drive up to the VA and visit some of the men and women who are recovering from the Iraq war and others. Show your gratitude!
What have you sacrificed for this country's security? I say not enough.
@marmotaM - If Jets protect us, then where were the jets when my neighbor beat me with a blunt object, then stole my kitten and threw it under a trax train ???/ Huh? Where where they then????
@Jimmybackus B. - Jets protect your freedom not your wimpy self from your neighbor if you would have kept your yuppie mouth closed you probably wouldn't have got beat up by your neighbor
@Jimmybackus B. - with that kind of attitude what are you doin in UTAH let alone AMERICA.. if you dont like it move away. Im sure we could use one less idoit!!!

@Amberbrown287 - Just wanted Amber to know that my son is a Mormon from Utah serving in the military protecting your freedom of speech to rant and rave against Mormons and Utah.
@Amberbrown287 - It is the sound of FREEDOM, Ill give you that but to sterotypically say everyone in Utah goes to church is ignorant. Half your "venting" didnt make sense but, being in the Air Force, I have to agree to pray for all our troops and airmen.
@Amberbrown287 - You've got to get a grip here and look at the bigger picture.
The consensus here is overwhelming that we love our warfighters, support you in what you do, and cheer when you walk by.
Out of 339 posts, you have only three or four that criticise, two of those criticised policy at the national level, one was upset that the noise woke her baby. That's not anti-military.
I would ask that you re-examine your view of Utahns and Mormons. I think you've got us wrong.
So what, its a loud price to pay, get over it. The base was more than likely here before you and quite possibly the reason you are here. A VERY SMALL taste of what I hear day and night as i sit here typing this to you from Iraq. Freedom is a rough life isnt it.....
That people that live on the EAST side of the Salt Lake Valley are such cry babies? I make more money than you...I need my peace and quiet. You have peace because of those jets, you idiots! That idiot lady they had on TV B!tching about the noise is a RETARD (no offense to the mentally challenged people out there)! Who cares about your stupid movie. WAHHHHH!!! I live right under the flight path and I have never been woken up by the sound of jets. But hey, they put your ugly face on TV and you got your 15 minutes of fame. Thank You Air Force pilots from the 388th for the job that you do in supporting freedom. Keep the afterburners fired up!!
Stop complaining you tree hugging liberals. Support our troops in all they do. They are the ones keeping Osama Bin Laden from knocking on your front door.
Them flying low & fast...the roar of the engines.
Nobody back home in CA cried about the noise...we supported them & loved having them winter in our desert. People complain about the littlest things.
I can't believe people call the police & news stations to ask about jets flying over their houses.
It's called Life...now go get one!
@dezertmom - I just moved to Kaysvile and when I heard jets I automatically assumed it was hill air force base practicing. If it were a war you would hear KABOOM somewhere. The second night I didn't even hear them anymore. It's really cool to see the jets flying around during the day. There's nothing cooler than watching a giant army airplane fly a few hundred feet above you toward a mountain and fly low right over into salt lake city restricted airspace. That's something that normally doesn't happen.
If the only price you have to pay for your freedom is to hear a few jets fly over your home and have a few nights of interrupted sleep, consider yourself lucky. The sounds of the F-16 is the sound of our brave men and women sacrificing their lives for your sorry arse!
I'm right, you're wrong. Deal with it!
www.flyingfatman.com
Kathy Craig should look at history. Without a strong military her grandparents may have heard jet engines over America in WWII. Jet engines came into existence at the end or WWII and it was the Germans that were flying with them! So Kathy, if your family felt the same way you do, we could all be speaking German!
As for Tooele not getting it's share of the noise, we'll trade you the jet noise (and the jobs) for our toxic waste. Is it a deal? Tooele County has far more real estate committed to the military use that Davis county has total land!
Do you read a newspaper or watch anything on T.V. other than your movie? Where were you on 9-11? If anything were to happen here in Utah, who would you want defending you? So quit your whining or move!
people ENJOY THE FACT HILL AIR FORCE BASE IS IN UTAH and either THEY .........THEIR FAMILIY MEMBERS.......OR FRIENDS..........have these no WORK JOBS AT HILL AFB AND MAKE BIG MONEY FROM THEM..........the price of FREEDOM CAN BE ANNOYING SOMETIMES .........BUT SO ARE YOU PEOPLE WITH YOUR WHINNING AND CRYING..............i love the sound of MILITARY JETS.........IT TELLS ME I AM SAFE and SECURE IN AMERICA........these same people WILL WHINE EVEN MORE IF THE DEMOCRATS ARE ELECTED and hill is SHUT DOWN
I SPEAK FOR THE SILENT MAJORITY ~ AND WE HAVE SPOKEN ~ DO THE MORALLY RIGHT THINGS ~ PRAISE THE LORD ~ AMEN
I used to live under the flight path of HAFB; while the noise of the planes could at times be a loud, I was always grateful that there are men and women who are dedicated to their training in order to be prepared to protect our nation and the freedoms we all enjoy (the same ones that allow you to moan and groan outloud). I'm pretty sure that at 11PM most of the pilots and supporting crews would have preferred being in my position, tucked in my comfortable bed sleeping, rather than in TRAINING. As a final note, I believe that I took for granted the measures employed on my behalf by HAFB until the "no fly" order was issued after 9-11. I had never truely realized the dread of silence until I no longer had planes "disrupting me". I will always be grateful for those minor "disruptions" of mean and women training on my behalf.
I meant men and women...did not mean to imply anything else, just a typo. Also it is not just HAFB that works hard but all those in the military--Allow me to give a shout out to say THANK YOU.
If you don't like thr noise of freedom maybe you should move to a quieter place and watch your movie if they let you have a movie or even electricity. This country ought to be very glad we have what we have. There is nothing better than the sound of freedom.
While you're home trying to get sleep or watch a movie, they're over there in the noise. They don't have the luxury of a quiet sleep or relaxing to a movie without being on alert. If they have to train afew hours in the night to keep up their skills for our safty and the safty of the people overseas, you shouldn't whine over noise and loss sleep. They need to be ready and train in any circumstances, so if you don't like it, I'm sure there's a country out there that will accomadate you.
the base has been there long before most of the houses arouond there. it keeps alot of people working and our pilots need to practice, i'm sorry for your inconveinence but as long as we want freedom then there are sacrifices that we will have to give. i don't here the airmen on tv complaing that they have to practice at night and why cant they do it during the day, no they do what is asked of them and dont complain because they know that what their doing is preserving our freedom and making a differnce acrros the globe. these men and women are not only giving 100 percent of themselves but their families too.
In what way is that "frightening?" I'll tell you what's frightening--NOT having those pilots and crews and any other soldiers get the training they need to defend us (and themselves and each other).
Every military base does this. I visited my brother in Kileen, TX and they were doing night maneuvers at Ft. Hood. You think F-16's are loud? Try tanks and cannon fire from "opposing armies"!
And I thank God that these men and women are willing to stay up all night to train. The most comforting thing after 9/11 was to look up and see the con-trails of the fighter planes patrolling the country (FYI, they usually DON'T fly where their con-trails can be seen--it was on purpose).
And I pray that they keep on flying--whenever and where ever they need to!
Let's see. Just a wild guess, but I would bet if someone checked Hill Air Force Base was there before they all built/bought their homes. I love these people who build/buy a house by the railroad tracks and then call and complain about the noise. Duh!
@Derrick T. - Since when is flying at night to train pilots for combat getting away with anything? Would you prefer just to shut the Air Force down and not allow them to train?
It isn't just to fight the war on terrorism, but also to "provide for the common defense." Do you want the defense of our country from whatever threat to be from the best trained and equipped military? What is your alternative?
I see my post about UFO's hit a few nerves. It is not uncommon for the ignorant or immature to throw out unwarranted accusations at those they disagree with. If you don't like the message attack the messenger. Nevertheless, I stand by my comment. Based on what I could hear out near Copperton, I do not believe the Jets were on a landing pattern. I do believe they were after something. And I believe the most likely explanation would be some type of unidentified craft (or UFO). I also am not against the noise of fighter jets out on missions for whatever reason. As the son of a retired Naval fighter pilot I welcome the sound of after burners at any hour. However I do encourage the readers to understand that if I am right in my analysis then it is a forgone conclusion that the officials involved will post a bogus story to cover the reality of the situation. I don't judge them. Its just the nature of the military.
As for the subject called "UFO's" if you need educating on the matter may I recommend starting with "disclosureproject.org". You may not like what they have to say. But it would be prudent to set aside your fear and incredulity and at least listen.
That sound you hear is the sound of freedom folks! Yes it maybe a abnormal noise for your area but its nothing to create a fuss about. it is a honor to hear such a beautiful sound! As far as the "whats the west desert for", it just so happens that an aircraft does have to fly to and from said desert! So just feel honored that you live in a "temporary flight path"!
You only see such a small picture of the larger effort to keep our beautiful country free! Amen
You live in a valley that has the SL International airport on one side and Hill Field up north on the other side. For years the sound level at the airport has been unbearable for most. Those that live there or near to it get no help from anyone. When the traffic pattern changes and the east side is taking it's lumps that is when it makes news. Get over it. It is about time the entire valley resonated with the sound of jets and not just the west side. These planes have to fly in a pattern that is safe so as not to cause problems with a landing or take off. That is what the airport controllers will tell you. That is what they tell the people that live near the airport. Even though the airport moved closer to more people they still say the same thing.
However, on another note, the airport authority does take noise complaints seriously. I do not know about Hill, I have not had any expierence with them.
You can fly over my house whenever you want anytime day or night! Thank you for keeping my house safe at night so I can have the luxury of complaining about the noise! Millcreek is spoiled and unpatriotic!
would you rather hear the jets with your freedom, or in a war zone. they are not doing it just to tick you off. they are doing it to prepare for the unthinkable. My son and son-in-law are both Marines in Iraq. Think of the noise they have to put-up with, rocket attacks, mortar shells, bombs, small-arms fire, OH and jet-planes. this is 24-7. SO QUIT YOUR WHINING. Maybe I should say I live just north of airport #2, I hear small aircraft, military helicopters, commercial jets all the time, GET OVER IT!!!
For all you cry babies out there, the base was opened in 1941. So unless you were born before that, you new the base was there. If you did not know that they fly aircraft from an Air Force Base then you are an idiot. So if it is to noisy or does not fit your schedule move. Pack up and go live in West Wendover. I am sure it is quite out there. That is the great thing about America is you are free, free to take your dumb A#@ to China, or maybe Afganistan, I am sure they well listen to all of your crying. Maybe even tend to your precious needs. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO HILL AFB 388 FW AND 419 FW. Keep up all the night flying!!
Some people out there, it seems, all they do is look for a reason to complain and find another problem with the government. These people are out there trying to train to protect our country and yet they find a way to complain about what they are doing. GET A LIFE! You live close to a training base and you have the nerve to pull this kind of bull s@$t. Do something productive with your lives rather then spend it complaining about anything and everything!!!
Everybody here complaining is a bunch of whiners. While you are at home sleeping, or not, these guys are trying to stay awake to do there jobs, a lot of them working over 12 hours a day just so they can deploy to some dump away from there families so you have the right to even complain. They are not trying to irritate you, and there flight path isnt there choice, it is governed by the FAA. I am sure this isnt permanent. Night flying happens only when they need it to maintain qualification
so they go fight the fight 24 hours a day. There is no timeout in war because the sun goes down. Those terrorists are just as dangerous, if not more at night than they are during the day. So I say cut these guys some slack, you may be loosing some sleep, but these guys are loosing a lot more.
These men and women are going worldwide, putting their lives on the line, to protect our freedom. I sacrifice very little for this freedom. It seems to me that a few sleepless nights is the least I can do to support them.
you live down there in all that bad air, and hot jet exhaust, why not just pack up and move to the fresh clean air in the mountains of Park City!! We will leave the light on for you...get over it you whiners that is the sound of your federal tax dollars at work training our young men and women to defend our great country!!
Everyone is flipping out about liberties and defending our troops. I appreciate peoples opinions and love the support we get. Having been to Iraq 3 times to include the invasion which was the actual war, general public does not understand what war is because we are usually too busy sitting home watching the news. If anyone wants to see why we train at night and what we do the public affairs office can certainly arrange a visit to the base or i would gladly let you work a 14 hour shift turning wrenches on those noise machines. I have deployed to the middle east region 7 times out of the 8 years i've served. I think i am the person who could tell you what you should believe and not some knucklehead (know it all) who posts crap on this site!!! I love serving my country and doing my job. Anyone who uses politics, religion, bias to put a spin on what the war is about is not a true AMERICAN! The truth is people are dying over there, we are helping by being there, nobody is going to be happy until the numbers of dead stop building! Until then, deal with living around here, move on the other side of the mountains where we don't fly, come see me and i will gladly show you exactly what we do and i promise you will appreciate us after that!! Training is preparing for war so obviously if we are training more, most likely those pilots and aircraft are going to war!!! easy enough.....crew chief out..
The flight pattern is determined by the way the wind is blowing. If it's coming from the north then that is the way we take off, wind creates lift which makes takeoff easier. The wind changes therefor our takeoff and landing direction does as well. There is no military regulation on afterburner takeoff!!! The reason they take off in afterburner is because the configuration the aircraft has for that flying day. Some are heavier than others i.e. fuel loads, external fuel tanks, accessary flight components.... Only time we take off in full afterburner all the time is in combat, which is called a combat takeoff. Or an incentive ride which we give outstanding individuals rides in our two seater jets. Clarity????
I've lived in Davis county for 6 years now and the jets are a normal part of life here! We hear them in the middle of the night all the time. Boo Hoo to you guys in the Salt Lake valley! They should fly your way more often so you can get used to the sound of freedom!! It is a thrill to hear them training! I get chills every time they fly over. They are doing their job! LET THEM! DIDN'T YOUR MAMA TEACH YOU NOT TO COMPLAIN!!
I was a maintainer over at Ellsworth AFB SD, home to the B1B Bomber before I moved to Hill to load the F16. Lady you don't have a clue of what loud is, The F16 has (1) engine, try (4) on 1 jet, Full AB flying over your house and having pictures drop off your wall and your plates rattling in the cupboard, man I miss that noise. Let our Pilots fly, and fly in peace if it's right
I say Yes it was loud, but also way cool for our family to see them at night. Not really them but the light/fire as they flew. It also gave us a chance to let our children know that they were pilots training in the "big" jets so, that they could protect us all from any bad people. I for one appreciate the fact that they do go out and train for any situation, day or night that may come up. Lose an few hours of sleep now or lose lives later. Thank you men and women of the military for giving 150% so that our families and children can grow up knowing you will be there to keep us safe.
that nice whistle/humm they give. i just dont get the planes i get the trains fire trucks u name it and i just do my thing and let them do theres. f 16s are a fine peice of airplane and watching them take off is even more cool with there fire commin out there tail. and i love all the planes they come over my home. go fighters keep it up better ours not theres as my dad would say. which he used to fly a b-29 in the eyes of hurricanes in the gulf. may he rest with the ground shaking to keep our freedoms
I was in shock last night when I saw the news and the lady complaining about how it was a total disruption! Uumm, just be glad that what you hear isn't one coming in to bomb us! It is the sound of freedom! It is the sound of some men and women training to go over seas to PROTECT us! I am so disappointed that people would complain of such a "disruption". Come on! Get a clue! They can't learn how to fly on a PlayStation! And yes, I do live where I have heard them many times! So don't even try the, "If you lived where I do, you would complain too" Be happy and appreciative of what they are doing.
What we all need to realize is that what we heard is the sound of Freedom! It is not like this happens every night. If we were under attack, we would pray to hear this sound. By the way, I am sure those fine men in those jets would have loved to be home with their families. Thankfully, the have given up some of their freedom so people can be at home at night safe and complain about a little noise. Can anyone control the winds so these jets can take off and land as to not tick anyone off? I don't think so. Also, if we were under attack, does the public think HAFB should wait for the wind conditions should be right as to not upset anyone?
Start complaining about something more important...........The price of fuel!
