SPRINGVILLE — Several Springville residents evacuated their homes because of a large natural gas leak early Friday morning.

The leak was reported near 50 North and 400 West shortly after 5 a.m. Crews stopped the leak just before 7 a.m.

Residents were being allowed to return home, but the Springville Department of Public Safety urged them to have a member of the fire department check their homes for unsafe levels of natural gas.

The leak was caused by the failure of a gasket at one of Questar's pressure-reducing substations, Springville authorities said. That portion of the system was by-passed while repairs were being made.

Natural gas service in the area was not expected to be affected.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
