PARK CITY — Administrators at the Park City School District are dealing with some unexpected growing pains as they face an unforeseen surge in enrollment.
For the past several years, analysts at the district were expecting some growth. But, not at the level they actually experienced.
“For the school year we’re in now, we’re noting about a 4.6 percent enrollment growth over last school year,” said Park City School District Business Administrator Todd Hauber.
He said that translates into an additional 209 students.
“We had not anticipated growth to this level," he said. "We were projecting growth in the 2 percent range. So, from that perspective, we have doubled our growth that was expected.”
For the most part, the district has been able to manage the growth without making major changes. But, it had to hire two more elementary school teachers at a time when most teachers are committed elsewhere.
“One of the challenges is finding a teacher that will be able to work for the school district on short notice,” Hauber explained.
District officials also are trying to figure out if this unexpected growth is the beginning of a trend or just a one-time thing.
“If it turns out we’re projecting another 4 percent growth, that’s a challenge. If it’s the way it has been in the past, between 1 and 2 percent, we’re probably OK and can manage things,” he said.
