Poll shows Sen. Buttars may face uphill battle for re-election
March 24th, 2008 @ 5:52pm

Richard Piatt reporting

Utah voters are enthused about this year's election. They're lukewarm on the Legislature, and they're not thrilled with state Senator Chris Buttars. That's according to the results of a Dan Jones survey for KSL and the Deseret Morning News.

Senator Buttars is up for re-election, and the poll shows he has a public opinion battle on his hands. Specifically, voters are indicating that they remember his comment about a bill he opposed. He said about the bill, "This baby is black. It's a dark ugly thing."

According to a poll of 208 people in District 10, which covers West Jordan and Herriman, 67 percent say Buttars should not be re-elected. Buttars still has a chance to come back, though. Twenty-three percent say they still support him.

But compare that to a statewide survey of 601 people asked the same question about their state senator. Forty percent said yes, and 44 percent said no. That's a far different response than Buttars is getting right now. That means other Republicans, or even a Democrat, have a chance in District 10 this year.

Pollster Dan Jones said, "It's not irretrievable, but it's going to be a very difficult task for him. He's going to be opposed within his own party and among Democrats. It is known as a swing district."

Overall the Legislature seems to be striking the right chord with voters. Job performance approval is at 58 percent statewide right now. Twenty-four percent say they disapprove. And interestingly, 18 percent say they don't know if they approve.

The poll shows that voter interest is very high right now for both Republicans and Democrats. You can read more details about the job performance of the Legislature in tomorrow's Deseret Morning News.
