WEST VALLEY CITY — A woman was rescued from her second-story apartment after a fire broke out in her living room late Friday, blocking her exit.

"She told us she was ready to jump about the time we arrived," said West Valley Fire Battalion Chief Chris Bichner. "Hopefully that prevented more injuries to her."

The woman, 41, was taken to the hospital with minor hand burns and was also treated for smoke inhalation, according to Bichner. He said the cause of the fire was under investigation and at least four families who lived at the building, near 3800 W. Rockwood Way, were displaced.

The Red Cross was assisting with arrangements for those unable to return to the flame-, smoke- and water-damaged building.

Bichner said about 80 percent of the damages are confined to the woman's unit, where the fire is believed to have started, but there was about $50,000 in damages to the building altogether.

Firefighters also found a small dog unconscious in the apartment and were able to revive it with 20 minutes of oxygen therapy. The dog and the woman were reunited after about an hour.
