SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah police are again warning students to be careful and look out for each other after a possible kidnapping attempt occurred near the dorms late Tuesday night.

A female student was returning to the dorms and parked her car Tuesday night. As she got out, she saw a white four-door car, similar to a Toyota Camry, police said, drive towards her, U. Police Sgt. Garth Smith said.

“She saw a white vehicle approach that resembled a friend’s vehicle," Smith said. "So she started walking towards it, when a male on the passenger side open the door and grab her.”

The student screamed and people came around the corner, which appears to have scared away the suspect.

The man is described as a white male with short blonde hair wearing a light blue, collared shirt. There is no description of the driver. The U. released a statement warning students to be extra cautious.

“In the interest of the safety and welfare of our campus community, we want to alert you to a criminal event that was reported to campus police during the night, so that you can be alert to and report any suspicious activity,” the statement reads. “We urge our students and staff to be always aware and sensitive to their surroundings, and to report any suspicious behavior on campus.”

The U. said that security escorts will be available to students 24 hours a day.

Officers do not believe this incident is related to the sexual assault that was reported on campus earlier in February. That suspect is also still at large. Police urge anyone with knowledge of these crimes to call campus police at 801-585-COPS (2677).
