SPANISH FORK — A Utah County deputy went home from the hospital 19 days after he was shot in the head during a chase. Deputy Greg Sherwood's community plans to be there for him during every step of his recovery.

Sherwood's wife, Gina, said her husband would prefer to skip all of the attention he's getting right now, but they appreciate the support.

"They're just all taking really good care of us," Gina Sherwood said.

Deputy Sherwood made the trip from the hospital in Provo to his home in Spanish Fork with a distinguished escort Tuesday.

"I am so excited. It's been a long time coming, and I'm just so glad he's home," Gina said.

His law enforcement family and neighbors are glad to see him doing so well.

"He was emotional about it. I was emotional about it. It's nice to see how much support we have," his wife said.

Neighbor Ashlee Fegan's husband is also a police officer.

"It made me feel super grateful that he came out of this, whereas there was so much sadness for the Wride family," she said.

Neighbor Kregg Chidester is starting a letter writing and email campaign for the deputy, so people can thank Sherwood for his heroism.

How to show support for Deputy Sherwood:

You can send a letter for Deputy Greg Sherwood to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, or an email to thanksofficersherwood@gmail.com.

  • Sheriff's address:
  • 3075 North Main St.
  • Spanish Fork, Utah 84660

"He knew that his friend had been killed, and he went anyway. That is the absolute definition of a hero," Chidester said.

Chidester believes everyone can help.

"Recovery can be painful. He's going to struggle some days, and hopefully having some letters of encouragement will help him to keep going," he said.

Gina Sherwood said her husband has physical therapy in front of him, and emotional healing.

"So, that's our next hurdle. Healing well. Now it's time for his heart to heal," she said.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office has left it to Sherwood to determine when he will return to work, his wife said.

Deputy Sherwood was shot during a Jan. 30 crime spree through Utah and Juab counties. Sgt. Cory Wride was killed in the incident.
