SALT LAKE CITY — An attempted murder charge has been filed against a man police say stabbed his sister's boyfriend earlier this month.
Timothy Darrell Montoya Jr., 24, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with knowing and intentional attempted murder, a first-degree felony.
Montoya was living with his sister and her boyfriend, Jarel Thomas, in an apartment in Olympus Cove on Jan. 15 when the alleged stabbing occurred.
According to charging documents, Montoya was fighting with Thomas, who eventually left the apartment. Montoya pursued Thomas into the parking lot and told him he was going to kill him, charges state.
Thomas turned around, and Montoya stabbed him in the chest, according to the charges.
Montoya was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Jan. 16. Thomas was treated for a collapsed lung.
A search of court documents revealed Montoya was charged in 2012 with violating a protective order, a class A misdemeanor.
