SPANISH FORK — The driver who died in a fiery crash on U.S. 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon on Friday has been identified.
Joe Dougherty or the Public Safety Division of Emergency Management identified the man as Gregory D. Leavitt, 34, from Pleasant Grove.
Leavitt was driving eastbound on U.S. 6 when for unknown reasons he crossed the lane into the path of on oncoming semitruck at about 6:55 p.m. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semitruck, David Lewis, was knocked unconscious in the accident and pulled from his vehicle by a witness. He was treated at a local hospital and released.
The impact of the accident caused the semitruck and two coal trailers to jacknife in the road. The semitrailers tipped over and spilled coal into the road. A fire briefly resulted, but by 7:45 p.m. both the truck and the car were smoldering. Crews from the Spanish Fork Fire Department doused the flames quickly, and the fire did not spread to the coal.
The road was closed until 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. All lanes are now open.
