SALT LAKE CITY — If you stood in line at a UPS Store Monday, you know why it's considered the single busiest day of the year for mailing packages.
In fact, the whole week — one UPS calls "peak week" — is expected to be extremely busy. This year's short shopping season and a huge weekend snowstorm in the Northeast only adds to the pressure to get everything delivered on time.
For UPS, Monday was the highest pickup volume day, with 34 million packages being processed nationwide. The company is officially in high gear, and that will continue through Dec. 24.
A big issue they're dealing with right now is weather-related holdups. Eastern snowstorms over the weekend caused the biggest package delivery delay in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
KSL News also received an e-mail comment about a one-day delay in the Salt Lake City area.
"We've actually worked over the weekend, as have several areas in the country, to get caught up," Streeter said. "And we expect in the next couple of days to be completely caught up."
Josh Anderson who was at the UPS store in Sugarhouse Monday, sending a package to his girlfriend and her daughter, said he had confidence the parcel would get there on time.
"I work for Home Depot and I see UPS trucks all the time, so I know they're a good service and they'll get it there on time," Anderson said.
UPS will pack and ship tens of thousands of packages this season. Employees advise you to remember to have the full address and phone number of the person you are sending your gift to. There are also tracking options on the UPS website.
Now UPS is gearing up for Tuesday — the highest delivery day of the year. The company expects to break a record with 29 million packages.
