PROVO — Ten of the remaining 14 old Heritage Halls student residences will be torn down at Brigham Young University, requiring students to move before the end of the year.

There are 320 students occupying five of the buildings scheduled to be torn down, according to BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins. Students will be provided with other on-campus housing at the same rate they are currently paying.

“We’ve notified all of the residents," Jenkins said. "We notified them early in the fall of the change. We’re doing everything we can to assist these students with the transition, including making sure they have time to study and complete their finals before moving.”

Four of the five buildings are occupied by female students, who will all move into a single nearby New Heritage Hall scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. A fifth old Heritage Hall is currently home to male students, who will be provided with housing options elsewhere on campus.

The five other buildings scheduled to be torn down are empty.

Four New Heritage Halls buildings will be added as the next phase of BYU's housing master plan, Jenkins said. The buildings will take the place of the old Heritage Halls buildings being town down in the northeast corner and bring the total number of new buildings to 12.

Construction on the four New Heritage residence halls is scheduled to begin during the 2014 Winter Semester and the buildings are planned to be in use by August 2015.

The four remaining Old Heritage Halls buildings will remain in use. They are currently occupied by students.

The first New Heritage Halls buildings were completed in 2011 on the site of the old Deseret Towers.
