SALT LAKE CITY — Former BYU football great and broadcaster Todd Christensen passed away Wednesday morning due to complications from surgery, according to an email from the BYU sports department. He was 57 years old.
A cause of the complications wasn't included in the statement from the university, but Christensen had publicly battled liver disease for at least 10 years.
After being recruited by Lavell Edwards, Christensen was a four-year starter at BYU from 1974-77. Christensen went on to have a stellar professional career in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Oakland Raiders. He made the Pro Bowl five times, two Super Bowl titles, and was named All-Pro twice.
After retiring from playing football, Christensen began a long broadcasting career, including stops with NBC and The Mountain Sports Network. His son Toby was a standout football player at BYU as well.
