SALT LAKE CITY — Halloween is usually a happy time for families. For one West Jordan woman, however, the night ended with a heartbreaking loss.

Erin Thomas took her three young children trick-or-treating at the South Towne Mall Halloween evening. At one point, she sat down on a mall bench to tend to her month-old baby boy. In the hustle of packing back up her diaper bag and shuffling her children through the mall, Thomas sat her camera down and forgot to pick it back up.

“I started packing up some things to get ready to go,” Thomas said. “With three kids, it was a little chaotic. Somehow I must have set the camera on the bench instead of back in my diaper bag and left it there.”

Back at home, Thomas’s children were heading out for more Halloween fun in the neighborhood. It was then she noticed the camera wasn’t in her bag.

“I called the mall immediately,” Thomas said. “I told them I had left it on a bench, but a mall worker told me he had seen a family come by and pick it up earlier.”

Thomas was devastated. Not only were there photos from the day her son was born, but there was also a number of photos Thomas had taken at her father’s funeral just one week before.

“Even If I don’t get the camera back,” Thomas said, “I don’t care, I just want my pictures back.”

She said the camera was a Sony Cyber Shot DSC rx100 and was left on the mall bench between 5:00 p.m and 5:30 p.m the evening of Oct. 31. It was a gift from her husband for Christmas this past year. While Thomas said she would love to recover the camera, she’s hoping at the least someone will return the memory card with her precious photos.

“If word gets out and they want to keep the camera and just return the memory card to me anonymously, that’s fine,” Thomas said.

Thomas has been distributing fliers to store owners at South Towne Mall and has posted the camera on local classifieds site. She's posting photos from her cellphone along with the ads in hopes the images will look familiar to whomever has her camera.
