SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Supreme Court is set to consider whether a man who nearly killed his girlfriend should have his prison sentence reduced.
The Utah Attorney General's Office says the court will hear the arguments in the case of Andrew LeBeau at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
LeBeau was convicted of kidnapping and assault in 2009 after he threatened to kill his girlfriend and forced her into his car. Prosecutors say he crashed the car after being chased by police. His girlfriend broke her arm and pelvis, fractured her legs and ended up with shattered eye sockets. She is permanently impaired.
During sentencing, LeBeau blamed his girlfriend for causing the crash by distracting him. A judge gave him the maximum sentence of life in prison.
LeBeau is asking that a judge reduce his sentence.
