SALT LAKE CITY — Firefighters were called to a four-alarm fire early Saturday morning.

According to officials, the fire broke out at Hill Crest Apartments, 155 E. 1st Avenue. It was contained to 2- to 3-foot area between the roof and the ceiling of three apartment units.

"There's fire stops in place in the attics, which are basically walls that will stop the fire from spreading from attic to attic," said Captain Marc Morger, of the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

Still, several crews — about 60 firefighters total — were needed to battle the blaze because of the precarious nature of its location.

More than 50 apartment residents were evacuated from the west and north wings of the complex. The Red Cross assisted in moving the displaced residents to an LDS church house one block north of the complex.

No injuries were reported, but the three units below the fire as well as several neighboring apartments had smoke and water damage. The extent of the damage has not yet been determined.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
