WEST JORDAN — A middle school in West Jordan is getting national recognition for something the students all did to help a victim of bullying.
Sunset Ridge Middle School not only focuses on stopping bullying, they also promote the positive. Their efforts got them noticed by the Disney channel.
One day a girl had a mean note stuck to her back. The student ambassadors rallied to help and by the end of the day, every student got a post-it with something positive written on it. The Disney Channel put together a piece on it but Principal Travis Hamblin says they didn't do it for the recognition.
"We do it because our students deserve the best," Hamblin said. "It's been really inspiring to see our students watch out for each other."
They have a yearly theme like empathy, respect and diversity, they put on a play, have a no-bullying pledge and a text line to report bullying and positive behavior.
"We positively reinforce what students are doing good," he said.
Hamblin says other schools are now asking them to train them in this student ambassador program.
"I don't know many people who would go back to middle school," Hamblin said. "We are trying to change that and say, this can be a great time in your life."
