SAN JUAN COUNTY — The Rainbow Bridge National Monument is closed indefinitely after heavy rains led to a trail washout.

According to the National Park Service, about 150 feet of the trail between the dock and the first shade structure has collapsed and is considered a "complete loss." There is now a 21-foot drop-off from the trail into Bridge Creek.

Crews assessed the trail Friday, and plans are already underway to develop a temporary trail until permanent fixes can be made.

The road in the Chains area near Page is also closed. The heavy rains deposited several feel of mud and sand onto some areas of the road and some areas have been water cut enough to make the road impassable.

Lees Ferry roadways were temporarily blocked by boulders and debris Friday. But crews were able to clear the road quickly. All roads and facilities are open in the area excepting a parking lot near Paria Canyon.

In Garfield County, the Hole-in-the-Rock road at Hwy 12 in Escalante has been closed due to heavy rain damage.

The National Park Service said that during the storm, evacuations were conducted as needed and no injuries have been reported.

They ask that park visitors be aware of the weather and their surroundings and use caution as flash floods happen very quickly.
