SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Fair opens this weekend, bringing all the magic and fried food such a venue can afford. If show-quality livestock, giant pumpkins and butter sculptures are your thing, make a date and visit this year's state fair.

Seasoned fair visitors will have no problem setting their own itinerary. Some head straight for the fine arts building to check out the latest and greatest from local amateur and professional artists. Others waste no time grabbing the best in fried delectables and desserts. Whatever your fair flavor, there are a few new things at the 2013 goings-on that will be sure to catch your eye.

The Great American Duck Race

Wait, what? Yes, you read right. This year the fair will be holding duck races throughout the day. A few (very) lucky audience members will be chosen at each event to hold and release one of four mallard ducks. The racing ducks swim down custom tracks designed for each bird. And don't you worry your pretty feathered head; the winners are awarded prices. The losers, however, must sadly make the swim of shame. The event is free with admission, but the memories will be priceless.

Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show

While this venue may have you sawing logs, it most definitely will not put you to sleep. Champion Iron-jacks will show off skills like logrolling, chopping, sawing, axe throwing and tree climbing. Legendary Paul Bunyan would approve of his namesake show, and spectators of all ages will keep on their toes watching feats of strength and daring deeds. The show is free to watch and held throughout the day on the main fairgrounds.

American Pickers (Saturday September 7 at 7:30 p.m.)

Do you have old junk hanging around your house? Do you enjoy picking up rusty artifacts from abandoned barns? Does your spare bedroom look more like the Indiana Jones' storage room than a place to sleep guests? If the answer to any of the questions is ‘yes', then you'd better show up to the American Pickers show.

Hosts Frank Fritz and Danielle Colby will choose a few lucky guests to come up on stage and present a piece or two of would-be antique treasure for analysis. They will determine, on the spot, if the artifact is worth millions or minutia. No weapons or firearms will be permitted on stage. The event is free with an admission ticket but show-goers should grab a seating ticket at the main ticket booth.

The Utah State Fair is a family tradition. If you're one who goes year after year to check up on the best the state has to offer in the way of flora, fauna and food, you will not be disappointed.

The fair runs September 5 through September 15 at the Utah State Fairpark located on 155 N. 1000 West in Salt Lake City. For more information, head to utahstairfair.com.
