SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City company recently unveiled a product that will save businesses in the metal market millions of dollars.

JMT-USA has been a family-owned and operated business since 1967. They design and sell different types of industrial grade metal fabricating machines that are used by companies worldwide.

The newest machine is the Fiber Laser cutting machine weighing 37,500 pounds. The metal fabrication machines are used to bend sheets of metal and bend them into a specific product. Instead of using CO2 gases to produce the laser beam, the newest machine uses fiber lasers, cutting metal faster and saving as much as 70 percent in operating costs.

"With Fiber Lasers, it expands the range of materials we can cut," said President of JMT-USA Kyle Jorgenson. "We can cut coppers, brass, mirror finish stainless."

Many people have never seen a manufacturing machine, but the products they create are used every day.

"People don't realize, you look all over the world, there's metal and part and pieces and somebody has built that," Jorgenson said. "This is a piece of stainless (steel)," he said gesturing to a piece of metal. "It could be an electronic part or a piece to a car."

The new laser cutting machine was built by Nukon, a company in Turkey. The two companies worked together on design, sales and service. There are currently only about 200 similar machines in service around the world.

"And when you see the difference between the CO2 technology and the fiber technology, all the customers are amazed," said Nukon International Sales manager Erkan Ozgur. "And especially in Europe and Brazil and all our other countries, the fiber laser technology is booming."

The laser cutter machine costs about $4 per hour to run, compared to the $30 per hour of the older machines.

JMT-USA and Nukon will be showing off the machine later during the year at the "FabTech" industrial show in Chicago.
