KEARNS — One man was killed and a woman critically injured in an accident Friday afternoon.

About 3 p.m., an SUV veered across three lanes of traffic and crashed into a concrete pedestrian crosswalk near 5200 West and 5000 South. James Randall Wilkes, 43, was killed instantly, said Unified Fire Battalion Chief Lee Ascarte.

The female passenger, in her 20s, had to be extricated from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life. She was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital in critical condition.

What caused the vehicle to cross over all those lanes of traffic and crash was unknown Friday afternoon.

Roads in that area were expected to be closed until about 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. while investigators reconstructed the accident.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
