SALT LAKE CITY — It's no longer enough to simply run a 5K race. These days it's all about running in mud or through bubbles or with obstacles. Thanks to Utah's Travis Snyder, the world now has the opportunity to run five kilometers through plumes of vivid colors, too.

In 2012 Snyder created The Color Run, wherein the runners get doused with powdered colors at each kilometer. Self-described as "The Happiest 5k on the Planet," the race features "paint" from brightly dyed food-grade corn starch and uses the white clothes of the runners as a canvas.

More than 6,000 participants are expected to run the race Saturday in Salt Lake City. Registration for the event is open to individuals, families and teams. The race will open at 8 a.m. with waves going every few minutes until 9:15 a.m.

In its first year, The Color Run hosted events in 50 cities domestically and in three international cities, with more than 600,000 participants. In 2013, the company expects to host 120 events in the United States and more than 30 events internationally, with more than one million participants.

The Salt Lake City run will benefit Global Poverty Project, an international education and advocacy organization working to end extreme poverty.

Kass Martin will be leading a Zumba warm-up about an hour before race on-site at the starting point. Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer Summer Sanders will be running the event with her family as well.
