HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Authorities say more than 500 Hill Air Force Base employees had their personal information compromised after a base employee sent the data to an unprotected email address.

The Standard-Examiner reports the breach happened in early July, when an administrative employee sent names and Social Security numbers of fellow employees to a personal account to finish the project at home.

That violates the policies of the base, the Air Force and the Department of Defense.

John Cullinane, the chief of the base's 75th Force Support Squadron, sent a letter to the employees who were affected and assured them the breach wasn't a malicious act.

But he recommended employees put an initial fraud alert on their credit files to prevent potential misuse of the information.
