SALT LAKE CITY — One woman attended the annual Salt Lake City 24th of July parade expecting it to be like every other year, but she left the parade engaged.

Kelly McArthur watched the parade at the intersection of 200 South and 200 East Wednesday morning. McArthur said she was watching for her boyfriend, Colton Lambert, who was participating in the parade.

Lambert is a Salt Lake City police officer on the motorcycle squad, and he rode in the parade with the other motorcycle officers. McArthur said she knew something was going on when Lambert got off of his motorcycle and began approaching her during the parade.

"I knew it was coming," McArthur said. "He asked my dad a couple of weeks ago, but I had no idea it would be in the middle of all the motorcycles. That was intense."

Lambert got down on one knee and asked McArthur to marry him in front of a cheering crowd of parade spectators, and the other police officers circled the couple with their motorcycles.

McArthur said that she and Lambert had been dating for about one year. The two met when McArthur was taking a journalism class at college and for one of her articles, she had been assigned to ride along with a police officer. McArthur and Lambert had dinner together after her assignment, and kept in touch and began dating.

The family will talk about their reactions to the public proposal on KSLTV at 6 p.m.
