WEST VALLEY CITY — Police are wrapping up their investigation after a man barricaded himself, his wife and 3-month-old child in their home for several hours Friday.

Police received reports of a domestic disturbance at around noon. Some houses in the immediate and surrounding areas were evacuated as a precaution and a SWAT team was dispatched to the residence near 4400 West and 3500 South.

Police said Loane Christmas Taylor, 22, and his wife began fighting in front of their child, at which point the wife called the police asking for help. Taylor then barricaded his wife and child in the home.

After about six hours of attempting to make contact with Taylor, police were able to secure a search warrant to enter the house.

"What we've been dealing with is a fairly lengthy history of domestic violence with this couple," said West Valley City Assistant Chief Mike Powell. "We do have a history of assaults, domestic assaults and domestic related charges with this particular individual."

Powell said Taylor has an outstanding domestic violence related warrant out for his arrest as well. Until the police diverted Taylor with tear gas, Powell said Taylor hadn't been cooperative. At that point, Taylor cooperated with police.

"These can be very dangerous situations and that's why we took every precautionary measure that we possibly could," Powell said. "That's why we utilized the SWAT team and the expertise that is available to us. We don't want to have any injuries as a result of these types of situations on any end, whether it be officers, victims or suspects."
