FAIRVIEW — A fire that started in a vacant barn burned another barn, several other outbuildings and camper trailers along with it Thursday.

In the center of Fairview city, a fire sparked in a vacant barn Thursday afternoon. Several homes and outbuildings surround the barn, firefighters said. Wind gusts blew embers from the barn fire to a nearby barn of hay, resulting in a four-alarm fire.

The fire overtook some additional outbuildings, along with two camper trailers.

Four fire departments responded, knocking down the flames. One home sustained some heat damage to its siding, but no homes were damaged otherwise. Nearby homes were evacuated while crews worked.

"That's the way it works around here. Each city has a couple engines, but never enough to do anything with wind," said State Representative Spencer Cox. "Everybody is great to respond. And then you have the neighbors with shovels and garden hoses."

A nearby propane tank caught fire and exploded, but neighbors and crews were able to put out the flames before it could spread to nearby homes.

Crews continued to monitor the fire Thursday night, particularly the barn with the hay.

One barn, owned by Maxine Anderson, was a place where grandchildren made memories, playing Annie-I-Over, she said. The grandchildren who would play in the barn were coming to visit this weekend.

Anderson lost a trailer, tractor, lawn mower, shed and an entire barn in just 10 seconds. But, she said, the loss of the barn and equipment won't delay their work. They will have to buy more hay but they do have other equipment and barns.
