FARMINGTON — An exploding transformer started a fire in the Farmington foothills Wednesday night. It was one of several fires that kept crews busy around the state.
The fire started just before midnight when a transformer blew up on the east bench, near 1700 South and 300 East. The explosion ignited bushes and trees near a subdivision.
Crews from several different agencies in Davis County responded and doused the flames.
Farmington's chief of police said the firefighters were aided by the wind and a firebreak that was already it place.
The fire scorched about 5 acres. Investigators are trying to determine why the transformer exploded.
Fire burns above gun range
About 65 firefighters were on the scene of a fire burning near a gun range in Eden. The Avon Fire, just above the Avon gun range, began around 7 p.m. Wednesday. It burned more than 100 acres.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and check hot spots in the area. They checked the perimeter to ensure no new fires would start. The main fuel source for the fire was oak brush. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Utah's other wildfires
Four other wildfires are burning in Utah, from Richmond in northern Utah to the Dixie National Forest in the south.
- Aspen Fire - 25 acres burning near Richmond
- Hell's Kitchen Fire - 15 acres burning near Yuba Lake
- Sinbad Fire - 216 acres burning near Moab
- Trail Fire - 2 acres burning in the Dixie National Forest
Most of the fires are small and were caused by lightning.
The largest is burning about 30 miles east of Moab, on top of Sinbad Ridge.
Smoke jumpers, hand crews and helicopters are working together to put out that fire.
