TOOELE — Two houses were destroyed Tuesday when a fire in one home spread so fast it caught the neighbor's house as well.

Seven crews responded to the two-alarm fire near the corner of 740 South and 780 West about 4 p.m. There were three people home where the fire started, and all made it out safely. The owner of the neighboring home had just put the house up for sale last week and moved to Seattle.

The fire appears to have started in the garage, where there was plenty to feed it, Tooele Assistant Fire Chief Bucky Whitehouse said.

"We've got several vehicles involved, several 4-wheelers involved," Whitehouse said. "With those come gasoline, rubber tires, and all of those types of accelerants as well.

Several neighbors, including Chris Raymond, heard explosive-like booms as the fire ravaged both houses.

"Boom! Loud as can be," Raymond said. "Like someone lit off a bomb is what it looked like."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and no damage estimate was available Tuesday. Crews remained on scene into the night dousing the smoldering remains.

Both homes are a total loss, and the Red Cross was on hand to find temporary lodging and support for the displaced residents.
