MURRAY — Police are investigating after a passer-by spotted a body Monday in Big Cottonwood Creek.

So far, little is known about the deceased man. His body was retrieved and turned over to the medical examiner's office, Murray police officer Jeff Maglish said.

There were no obvious signs of trauma to the body, but police are calling the death suspicious as they await autopsy results. The man appears to be in his late 20s or early 30s.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to contact the Murray Police Department at 801-264-2673.

The body was spotted about 1:20 p.m. by a pedestrian crossing the creek on the Van Winkle Expressway bridge near 850 East.

"It was never a search and rescue-type situation," Maglish said. "That bridge isn't used very much. … We don't know how long (the body) had been there."

There was no identification on the body, and police haven't received any reports of a person falling in the river, Maglish said. Police are checking with other jurisdictions in case the man went in to the water farther upstream.
