PRICE — A 27-year-old man with special needs was killed Sunday when a train hit him near the Price River.
The man, who has been a ward of the state for 10 years, was fishing with his long-time caretakers, according to police. At some point during the fishing trip, one of hundreds such outings, police said, he began walking back to the caretaker's truck along the train tracks.
An eastbound Union Pacific train with only three engines and traveling without cargo headed into the area at about 6:25 p.m. Those on the train saw the man and did everything in their power to stop, according to police, but were unable to do so and the train struck the man with special needs.
Officials said the man has a fascination with trains, but they don't know if that could have played a part in the accident. He has apparently been in the area frequently without incident.
