NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — A 20-year-old central Iowa man has been reported missing while on a hitchhiking and train-hopping trip across the country.

The mother of Daniel Landgrebe, of Newton, says he was last heard from on June 24. Susanne Landgrebe says her son left their home on May 25 without a cellphone or any other electronics, because he wanted to write a book about what it was like to travel off the grid.

Susanne Landgrebe says her son agreed to contact her every two to three days, and kept his word until June 24. When they last spoke, Daniel Landgrebe told his mother he was in Salt Lake City and was planning to head 400 miles north to Jackson, Mont.

Susanne Landgrebe says she has contacted police and Union Pacific railroad authorities.
