SALT LAKE CITY — Sunday was the first day Fourth of July enthusiasts could buy their fireworks from a grocery store or stand.

Last year's dry conditions brought a drastic drop in sales, and fireworks stand owners are hoping to make a comeback this year, starting Sunday.

Brian Nelson said he is excited to open his tent for business despite his 60 percent drop in sales last year. He is staying positive, and hoping for at least a 20 percent increase over 2012.

"We were very lucky to probably break even, so you put the whole season in it and it's hard to get motivated to do it again," Nelson, owner of Fireworks Frenzy said.

Nelson believes the key to boosting sales is educating buyers and make them feel more comfortable. He makes sure his customers know what they're buying, how to use it, and ways to stay safe.

"We've seen a lot of problems where people are coming in and buying the new aerial devices that are legal, and don't know they it's an aerial so they might not have the proper distances," he said. "They might not have it in the proper area or secure it properly."

While some people planned on "going all out" purchasing fireworks, most people KSL spoke to Sunday said they will not be spending any money on fireworks this year because they are afraid of starting a fire in dry conditions.

"I think they're dangerous, I think they're loud, I think this is the wrong state for them," said Abbie Brown. "I think they're a fire hazard."
