SUNSET — A Sunset man was on life support Saturday after he was burned when his house caught fire.

The 63-year-old man sustained burns over about 40 percent of his body and was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital's burn center, Sunset Fire Chief Neil Coker said.

Fire crews responded to 2232 N. 75 West about 2:45 a.m. Saturday. The man was located in the living room, where the fire began, and was evacuated within minutes of firefighters arriving, Coker said.

The fire was contained to the living room, which suffered extensive smoke and heat damage. The cause is still under investigation.

The man lives with one son, who was at work at the time of the blaze, Coker said. Because of poor health, he sleeps in a recliner in the living room.

A renter who lived in the basement was unharmed.

The man's name and updates about his condition were not released Saturday.
