RIVERTON — Thousands of children play little league baseball every year, but in August, more than 1,700 athletes in Riverton won't have a field to play on.

The baseball park in Riverton will no longer be available starting Aug. 15. The area will be repurposed to accommodate a wider range of activities for Riverton citizens.

"It's really going to be usable by a wider range or Riverton citizens," said assistant city manager Jeff Hawker.

Hawker said it's his obligation, and that of the city, to serve its residents. But those who use the fields for baseball say the area has provided a lot of memories for the citizens.

"I grew up playing here," said Riverton resident Jake Mortesen. "I just like them."

The city, however, said a public park is more fitting to serve the needs of the community as a whole.
